Anybody have any relief from a herx using this?

I thought that stuff contained that "PPA" or whatever??
Posted by 5vforest (Member # 29365) on :
My LLMD (well regarded) recommends it. In fact, he doesn't even specify the "plus gold", just says Alka-Seltzer + lemon + water.
Posted by fflutterby (Member # 28081) on :
Lymetoo what is PPA ? I just took it.
Posted by fflutterby (Member # 28081) on :
Has it worked for anyone ?
Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :
Nope.. I'm wrong. Just looked it up. Wrong initials for sure. I was referring to that ingredient that is found in some cold medicines.
Posted by momlyme (Member # 27775) on :
The Gold is chemical free. That is why they specify Gold.
I got a box of AlkaSeltzer Gold for my son. I had to order it through Amazon as I could not find a pharmacy that carries it. He hates the taste of it so only tried it once.
At the last ILADS conference this was mentioned:
# For Herxheimer reactions: 2 Alka-Selzer Gold (no aluminum) in 8 ounces of water with lemon or lime followed by 6-8 capsules of glutathione or 1500 mg or oral liposomal glutathione. 70% will fell better in hours

Thanks Lymetoo, for checking in to that. We are lucky to have you Posted by fflutterby (Member # 28081) on :

I have taken Alka-Seltzer Gold for yrs occasionally. Have not added the extra things posted.I just took some tonight for the first time in a long time. Helped BIG time. Joyce

I'm taking it - feel no difference. But i'm not using the glutathione as well.
Posted by NanaDubo (Member # 14794) on :
I use Alka Seltzer Gold - my doctor in WA told me I can use it as much as 3-4 times a day when needed. I am detoxing and it helps a LOT with that "horrible feeling" of too many toxins circulating.
I don't add anything to it.

I usually try to break my products down by per dose cost to see if they will be affordable over time.
This product you linked to (at the store on the same site) is $63 for 8oz. Each oz = appx. 1020mg glutathione
1500 mg (as recommended by ILADS) = appx. 1oz 1/2
1 bottle = 5-6 doses
Cost per dose = $10.50-12.60
They all seem to be right around $60 when I look for Liposomal Glutathione... I would love to find a fair price per dose. Anyone tried Liposomal Glutathione?
Posted by fflutterby (Member # 28081) on :
I agree Heather, I cannot spend that much. I would live to see a more affordable option that is effective.

I wonder why it's Alka Seltzer Gold that's recommended and not just plain sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)? They're very similar and it might be more cost effective to use the baking soda, not to mention easier to find.
I used glutathione in a lotion form, is that what you're talking about? It did nothing for me. I got more benefit from whey protein and coffee enemas which increase natural glutathione.
Posted by fflutterby (Member # 28081) on :
Thanks Six, I really need to get with the program on the enemas. Do you replenish the good bacteria after? Can you do a probiotic enema?
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
Six, I wonder why too. Alka Seltzer is high in vitamin C and sodium bicarbonate. It works by changing your PH level. I really question, however, how good it is to take so much sodium bicarbonate, given it's an antacid and what it will do to one's stomach acid down the line.
I think it ruined mine. I now have low stomach acid and I was taking the Alka Seltzer Gold back in the early 90's for migraines long before I knew I had lyme. And it worked mostly because of the high levels of vitamin C but I'm sure that is what killed my stomach acid. Now I must supplement with hydrochloric acid.
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
I just took probiotics orally, I never felt the need to replenish bacteria. It's a "low" enema, so it's not like doing a colonic. You will know after the first one if it's a good thing for you. Start out with very weak coffee, a small percentage of people have a bad reaction.
I always felt about 30% better after a coffee enema. I drank the whey protein twice daily to be sure I had the raw materials for gluathione.
Abxnomore, yeah, I'm low stomach acid, too and supplement HCL. Part of it could be age (I'm 47), part of it could be family history (my extended family has a LOT of reflux, which can be from LOW stomach acid). I also take lots of vitamin C, more so in the winter because I tend to catch everything that goes around, and with 6 kids, I'm exposed to it all!!!
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
Well one will never know but I was much younger when I was tested (I know it decreases with age) and it was revealed that I had low stomach acid. I always felt it came from all that Alka Seltzer Gold that was always so difficult to find!
That's what is is designed to do, reduce stomach acid and indigestion.
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Oh, I agree abxnomore, I wasn't arguing with you.
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
I didn't think you were! Posted by Healing in Santa Cruz (Member # 7798) on :
I don't take it often, at all.Once in a while when herx's get too much. I have tried plain baking soda and it doesn't do the same. There is also a product called Tri-Salts but that also did not help like ASG. Docs suggest it though.
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
Plain baking soda won't work because you're missing the high dose vitamin C that's in the Alka Seltzer. It's the same concept behind the water and lemon.
I think doing it once in a while is fine. I worry about doing it on a steady basis since it will erode the stomach acid, then causing other problems.
Posted by phyl6648 (Member # 28522) on :
Its good for food allergies, never thought of using it for herxing. I had my pharmacist to order it for me.

I just came across this thread for the first time since my post above...
Six and Abxnomore - you both mentioned low stomach acid - I know form the Stomach assessment test (drinking water with baking soda and timing how long it takes to burp) that both my son and I have this problem too... we never burp.
The link from that page for those who never burp goes to this page: REVERSING HYPOCHLORHYDRIA
Hypochlorhydria is the very common condition of inadequate production of hydrochloric acid by the parietal cells in the stomach. It is estimated that hypochlorhydria effects half of all people over age sixty-five. However, it can be present at any age.
Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is necessary for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. It also kills many organisms and helps to keep the stomach sterile. Hypochlorhydria can produce: belching, bloating, fullness for extended time after eating, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, hair loss, weak finger nails virtually any symptom. Autoimmune and degenerative diseases are caused in part by hypochlorhydria.
Hypochlorhydria, or the more severe achlorhydria (complete lack of hydrochloric acid), can result from several causes. One cause is use of acid blocking medications. These are often used for digestive symptoms that are actually due to lack of HCL!
Nutrient deficiencies can contribute to impaired HCL production. Histidine (an amino acid), zinc, and vitamin B1 are all needed for HCL production. If any of these are lacking in the diet or not absorbed properly, this can result in hypochlorhydria. Interestingly, the absorption of histidine and zinc are dependent upon the presence of adequate levels of HCL!
To me, this zinc/B1 deficiency points me back to HPU/ KPU... any comments?
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
Interesting, Heather. That's probably right, digestive issues are on a lot of KPU symptom lists I've seen. So, I guess a person supplements HCL while doing KPU?? That's how I'm handling it for now.
Posted by momlyme (Member # 27775) on :
Supplementing with HCL temporarily while doing the KPU treatment is what I have decided to do, too.
Right after I did that stomach acid test, and according to the test, my son and I both have no stomach acid --I ordered the HCL supplement.
Posted by sixgoofykids (Member # 11141) on :
I'm wondering if it will be temporary .... which came first? I have no reason to believe I was born with Lyme since my symptoms started after tick bites, but I always had stomach problems from the time I was a kid.
I fit the "KPU profile". I think I'm one of the ones who had KPU prior to Lyme. I can see that many family members probably have it, and they have the stomach problems, too, unfortunately, their docs have them on things like Prevacid, etc.
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
Thanks momlyme. I have known that I had low stomach acid since the 1980's. I did a Heidelberg test and it confirmed it and I have been taking Biotics Hydo-Zyme and Tyler Similase with my meals ever since and it works fine for me.
I was also told that was why I had picked up a ton of intestinal parasites.....I remember that doctor telling me I had a compete zoo in there. That was before the Lyme was discovered!

I believe my son had HPU all his life. I remember him asking me once why he had white marks on his fingernails and I just brushed it off like it was nothing. I thought it was nothing! Imagine my surprise when I found out this was a key component to his recovery.
Dr. K. said once (don't remember if he spoke it or I read it) that some people with lyme develop HPU and some people with HPU get lyme. So, I would have to believe he it happen both ways.

Is Heidelberg test the same thing as the Stomach acid assessment test? The one with baking soda and water + waiting for a burp?
Interesting to think that is why we have parasites in our guts. That makes sense. Must be a pretty nice environment for them.
Yuck. Gotta start my parasite cleanse again.
BTW, how did the doctor come decide you had parasites... did he do testing? Or just by symptoms?
