Any other tips for taking Mepron? Eat with fatty meal, shake bottle first, what else? Thanks.

It's been said that the optimum dose of Mepron is 2 tsp twice per day so if you follow this you must be sure to take lots of liver support and be diligent with detoxing.. Labwork is essential and should be done at least monthly.
Pulsing Artemisinin would be good too and don't forget to take Mepron with a Macrolide like Zith or Biaxin.

Mepron works by oxidizing, so do not take any antioxidants.

Could be mistaken but I thought one is not supposed to take CoQ-10 with it?
Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :
No, just the opposite. No coQ-10!
Carol In PA, when you say no antioxidants with it - can you take alpha lipoic acid between the mepron doses? I have not read anything about not taking antioxidants - just coq10.
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
That's what I said, no COQ10.

Nefferdun, from what I've been reading, some LLMD'S say to take antioxidants away from the Mepron.
This doesn't make sense to me, as both will be in your body at the same time. The antioxidants will decrease the effectiveness of the Mepron.
However, going for months on end, never taking antixodants seems like a really bad idea. I don't know the answer, maybe someday they will say to pulse the Mepron and take antioxidants on the other days.

Sorry Abxnomore. I am brain dead.
Carol in PA, what can you take for liver detox? I believe someone said no milk thistle either so what does that leave?
Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
No problem. I usually am too....;-)

Agreed, Carol! I believe the usual recommendation is to avoid fat-soluble antioxidants like Vit E and CoQ-10.
I still eat small portions of organic wild blueberries (bought frozen), cranberries, pecans with my quinoa and in oat bran, and take esterified Vit C daily while on Mepron and/or Malarone. Those all provide antioxidants.
I eat half of an organic apple with almond butter about once a week. Apples contain antioxidants, too.
Healing herbal teas containing antioxidants may be enjoyed while on Rx Mepron. Check with your LLMD.
Side note: Many LD patients may be on a "no fruit" diet as part of candidiasis control. Fructose can be just as challenging as cane sugar if you've got yeast overgrowth.
Found this on a quick web search: ******************************** Foods are considered to be the preferred way of boosting antioxidant levels because they're thought to contain a wide array of antioxidant substances. Many of the them are also high in vitamins, minerals and fiber.
A USDA study analyzed the antioxidant content of commonly consumed foods. Researchers tested more than 100 foods. Here is a ranked list of the top 20 fruits, vegetables and nuts:
1. Small red bean (dried), 1/2 cup 2. Wild blueberry, 1 cup 3. Red kidney bean (dried), 1/2 cup[br[ 4. Pinto bean, 1/2 cup 5. Blueberry (cultivated), 1 cup 6. Cranberry, 1 cup (whole) 7. Don't spill any on your carpet. It will not come out Posted by Abxnomore (Member # 18936) on :
And it's also too expensive to spill anywhere!!
Sorry about your carpet! Posted by lindaca (Member # 23871) on :
Guidelines are 23 grams of fat per dose.
I figured out that's 1 cup of full-fat yogurt or kefir, plus 1 tablespoon flax seed oil.
My preferred cocktail is to put this in a blender with frozen blueberries, green powder, a little stevia, and whatever other supplements I decide to dose it with (usually maca powder and larch powder). Makes a tasty smoothie!

lindaca, where did you learn 23 grams of fat per dose? Curious...
My LLMD says a meal with 25 to 27 grams of total fat per dose is needed so atovaquone (Mepron or Malarone) can be properly absorbed and metabolized.
Posted by the3030club (Member # 21898) on :
isn't that pretty close? 23-27 grams?
Posted by lululymemom (Member # 26405) on :
It's 23 grams...but if you take more than 1 tsp. then it's more fat.
Posted by Remember to Smile (Member # 25481) on :
23 grams of total fat isn't enough for adults on a common therapeutic dose of Mepron (at least 1.5 tsp, twice per day).
@ the3030club -- In terms of Mepron dosing, I've been told that every little bit DOES count. Important to measure the dose very carefully and count fat grams carefully. If a meal comes up short, eat a handful of sunflower seeds, etc.
Often I'll have quacamole appetizer before dinner for the addition of healthy fat needed for Mepron metabolism.

I did a search on alpha lipoic acid and Mepron. It does not interact. But milk thistle does lower the levels of Mepron and should not be used.

From Dr. S. Book "The Lyme Disease Solution"
Precautions: There are important precautions related to atovaquone. The first is that it can cause temporary liver damage, and for that reason, blood tests for liver function must be followed on a regular basis while using either of these medications.
The second precaution concerns the use of supplement doses of coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E while on atovaquone. These should not be used while taking atovaquone because they are all fat-soluble antioxidants that tend to neutralize the pro-oxidant effects of atovaquone against Babesia.
