Hi everyone, my daughter was just prescribed Flagyl for the first time. Would love to hear any experiences you have had good/ or bad on them.

He also said no alcohol, my daughter is 15 so alcohol is not a concern but what about alcohol based products like hand santizers, nail polish remover, etc. He only mentioned no mouth wash and no alcohol.
Anyone?
Thanks!

Flagyl gave me the first herx I ever had. I got rid of lyme using flagyl and high dose amoxicillin. It is a great killer of lyme.

You cannot ingest alcohol while on flagyl. So, there is no need to worry about nail polish remover, etc. You are not ingesting the nail polish remover. Just things you eat or put in your mouth like rum balls, mouth wash with alcohol, toothpaste with alcohol, etc. (Burrascano says that toothpaste may contain alcohol, so check it.)

Also, flagyl will give you intestinal yeast, meaning in your mouth, etc. You must be on a strict anti-yeast diet while taking it plus on a good probiotic. Still, you could get a case of yeast and need a diflucan prescription. So, watch for the white tongue.

From page 15 of Burrascano:

Important precautions:

1. Pregnancy while on Flagyl is not advised, as there is a risk of birth defects.

2. No alcohol consumption! A severe, "Antabuse" reaction will occur, consisting of severe nausea,
flushing, headache, and other symptoms.

3. Yeast overgrowth is especially common. A strict anti-yeast regimen must be followed.

4. Flagyl can be irritative to the nervous system- in the short term, it may cause irritability, "spacey" feelings, etc. Longer term, it can affect the peripheral nerves, causing tingles, numbness, etc. If mild, a change in dose may be required. Often, extra vitamin B can clear these symptoms. If the nerve symptoms persist or are strong, then metronidazole must be discontinued or these symptoms may become very long lasting.

5. Strong Herxheimer-like reactions are seen in almost everyone."

at first flagyl gave me terrific migraines.

but now i'm back on it for diverticulitis and i have to take 500 three times a day for 14 days!!!

so far i've not had any herxes but we'll see.

and yes you really have to watch your yeast on this. my sister didn't and ended up pretty ill afterwards because the yeast was out of control. took several weeks of diflucan and suppositories to get it under control

Thanks for the responses, but have another question. My daughter has been on Flagyl for two days, she woke up with a 102 fever this morning. I don't think fever is considered a herx. Could she be having an allergic reaction? She's been allergic to alot of meds since we started like Bactrim, Rifampin and any kinds of aspirin's...
