Other than that, make sure your doc gave you a prescription for Actigall to go along with it as well as a prescription for an EpiPen in case of emergencies. Rocephin is easy to tolerate for most, just do your normal detox and infuse over 30 minutes or more.

my husband started IV Roc @2 grams just last week- so far so good, 4 days on then 3 days off for 6 weeks of IV 2 grs-2 weeks, 3 grams-2 weeks and final 2 weeks at 4 grams, but NO PICC line!!
he didn't want one
does ANYBODY have any experiences to share on IV without a PICC????? mild swelling is already an issue..... other than that no reactions/allergies or herxing at this point!!
ANYONE TO SHARE???
As lindaca said- gallstones are def an issue with Rocephin!! good luck and I hope more people answer your post!!!!!

I have been doing IV Rocephin 4 days on 3 days off. Right now I am on week 10 with no PICC. My LLMD is not a big fan, but will order if needed. At this point I just keep going week to week to see if we can avoid it.
I have a nurse come out every Monday to start the IV, then I pull it on Thurs.

My LLMD has orders for the Rocephin through a home infusion agency. They send a nurse out once a week to put an IV in on Mondays. Then I just hook myself up Tues-Thurs and pull it out after I am done on Thurs. Working out fine so far. The nurses that come always push for a PICC line, but I have my doctor's support and so far, so good.

I got my picc put in today and it wasnt bad at all. I got my first dose while at the hospital and all of my supplies were delivered to my home this evening. Very little discomfort. If I get ANY relief then it has all been worth it. My Dr. did not prescribe Actigall so I am a bit nervous reading about the potential for gall stones. The last thing I need are more medical issues.

I did IV rocephin for 8 months straight.
It has been an important part of my treatment process.

You can do it yorself if you have a good vains . You need peripheral catheter and normal saline 0.9% sterile and you mix the rocephin with normal saline and then you can inject thru peripheral catheter in the vain I do it after i mix rocephin 2 Gr in two 20ml sterile normal saline syringes and inject it on the vain for an hour,is less expensive no need for IV system or NACL sterile bag.

After 8 months of IV Rocephin treatment, my Picc line was removed this AM. Yea!!!!
I have been showing significant gains in the past two months and its time to start weaning off the abx.
Here are some tips I learned from having my picc:
1) A good cover I found for showering is by XeroSox. www.xerosox.com Works great for quick showers and dips in the pool, while holding arm overhead for most of the time. Does not work well submerged in a bath tub or hot tub. They are tight when you put them on- I used baby powder to help it slide on and that was a godsend.
2) I liked to cover my picc with these socks called Ovation Zocks- (google them) which I just snipped the end off of. They were great for the summertime- light, stayed in place, gave excellent coverage compared to regular socks, tube bandaging, etc. Plus the patterns are fun- might as well have some joy in your day while fighting the nasty buggers right? Sorry the patterns probably don't apply to the men out there.
3) When I increased my Omega 3 dosage to 2g/day, my insertion site bled a bit more. When I decreased the dosage, the bleeding stopped.
4) When I took Transfer Factor to help with my WBC count, it caused an immune reaction and pus came out of my picc insertion site. Scary....and I was able to get dressing changed same day and this was the only time it happened.
5) If my arm got itchy around the dressing, I carefully sprayed a light coating of Benedryl spray around the dressing- this helped.
6) I found my arm liked it best if my stat lock was changed every two weeks instead of every week. If changed each week (for me) my insertion site bled more.
7) I also needed to keep my stat lock very close to its original position and not let it "wander" too much. One time, a nurse moved it over about an inch and the line just pulled on the hole all the time and I bled like a stuck pig.
8) I have just learned that you are apparently not supposed to take blood via your picc line, although this is how my nurse did it each week. Oops.
9) If my arm got a little warm or swollen, I iced it. If it got twitchy and tight, I applied light heat.
10) Despite initially being careful with my picc, most of time I forgot it was there. As I got better, I was able to do full pilates classes, ride my horse, and muck stalls with no issues.
Good luck to everyone out there with their lines and treatment. I know I was lucky to get an 8 month run in with no issues. I hope this helps!!!
I have kept the line and now I am wondering if I should have some sort of ceremony and bury it in the backyard or whether I should string it on the Christmas tree [Big Grin]

Yes, I was put on actigall for the entire duration of my rocephin treatment.
I also did 2 months of plaquenil, followed by 2 months of tindamax for cyst busting. I also did 60 days of grapefruit seed extract in there. Herxed on all.

we have someone come every morning for 4 days straight.... a private nursing company. each time a new injection site! ouch! that's what worries me, if he has any problems each time with a new site, it could limit his capacity to continue treatment for the duration!??
carebear- you leave a "normal"IV in for 4 days at a time... no issues??
mbdq, 8 months of Rocephin @ what dosage??? very curious!!
he is also on DELURSAN- not common in the States, but it is an Actigall thing/also simultaneously taking Plaquenil.
For now, it is a 6 week TX- we'll see!
