Is there anything proven to prevent or treat viral infections, specifically coxsackie virus?
I'm wanting to go visit my sister this weekend to celebrate her birthday. Problem is that the little kids she babysits are sick with Hand Foot and Mouth disease (coxsackie virus).
They had fevers over the weekend, mouth and hand blisters appeared today. They will be highly contagious this week and will continue to shed the virus for several more weeks.
I really really want to go visit my sister because she lives out of state and I don't get to see her often. But she could be incubating the virus or be contagious with a low grade infection. I don't want to risk of relapse or worsening of my Lyme symptoms and there can be serious complications from this infection in immunocompromised people.
As far as I can tell there is no antiviral treatment for coxsackie viruses.
I've read a little about oxymatrine as a general antiviral treatment but not sure if it would be effective for this virus. Do any of you have thoughts or experience with this?

My EDS practitioner makes homeopathic remedies which she says can really help prevent you from getting the viruses she puts into her remedies. Not sure if you can find an EDS practitioner who will do this, but that is an option.

Thanks tickbattler, I do know an EDS practitioner but would not be able to get an appt with her this quickly.
I need to make a decision soon so that my family can make plans for this weekend. My head says don't go but my heart wants to go.

Can you find "timaca" here? I thought she was treating for this?
I wish you could stay home, but I KNOW how hard it would be for ME to pass up seeing a sibling I love!

I had Coxsakie. It took a full year to recover plus it seemed to hyper activated Herpes Virus, so, really felt very sick.
How about Skype? You could visit without risking your health and then later when things are more calm perhaps you can plan a visit.

My sister called, says she feels "like death". It's a bummer she's sick but at least I don't have to be the reason birthday weekend got postponed.
Thank you Lymetoo and amberini for sharing your thoughts with me. You made me feel not so crazy.

Good... I'm sure that makes you feel a bit better about it!
Your sister may need to be evaluated for the virus.

I would never knowingly expose myself to a virus of this magnitude, especially when I already have LD. Its not worth the chance in my opinion. Adding another illness to the mix could set you way back.

Typical doctors won't treat for coxsackie virus. They do not believe that it can cause serious complications or chronic infection in healthy people. My sister is generally healthy so hopefully she will recover quickly. Plus they're kinda stuck in the blizzard right now so I doubt she'll go anywhere today.

Whew, I'm glad you're "saved" from this one! No way would that be a good idea, hard as it would have been to say no.
