My wife's herbalist, who is Lyme Literate gave a blend of herbs in which licorice root is also there.

Licorice root is used for several purposes.

A) It is used in blends as a herbal harmonizer. When different herbs have different actions, licorice root is the peacemaker between them all, writes oriental medicine doctor Michael Tierra in his book called The Way of Herbs.

B) It soothes the digestive tract lining

C) Supports the adrenal glands

D) HOwever the glycerrhizin in licorice can stimulate the adrenals to the point of raising blood pressure. The thing to do is to buy the DGL product (so labeled on the bottle). This has the glycerrhizin removed, and is safe for longterm use.

To note it is probably impossible to remove every last trace of it, and people who are unusually sensitive (like environmentally ill people) may react to the traces left in the herb.

That said I have never seen it happen. It's rare but I still mention it as a caution.

The above information has not been evaluated by the FDA and does not diagnose, cure or prevent any disease. Drugs and herbs may interact, talk with your doctor.

My ND considers licorice an important ingredient in the adrenal support tincture she has me on.

and that tincture made a huge difference in 3 days.
