Dr. wants to start IV vanco. next week. Any thoughts, experiences, etc? Infusion nurse says its a tricky drug to deal with.

I had a bad reaction to it...my doctor told me it was an allergic reaction but I'm not completely sure.
About half-way through the infusion, I started getting really itchy on my head, neck and upper torso (chest, upper back). Then, I got light-headed. And then, I got really, really severe burning pain in my bladder that radiated down both legs. I was writhing in agony and screaming because it hurt so bad.
Benadryl stopped all these symptoms within a few minutes, and I've been told not to use Vancomycin ever again. But I'm not sure if the issues I experienced were from an allergic reaction or from a herx. I've never had anything else do this to me.
Erythromycin, which I think is related to Vancomycin, caused a rash on my chest and abdomen, and gave me diarrhea and nausea/vomiting (all stopped with a dose of IV Benadryl), so that too is listed as an allergy for me...
