Is there anyone taking ceftin to treat their lyme.
If so, does it work well? I read that it is not good to take for more than 21 days, but I was yet perscribed it for 3 months. I have been perscribed it to take the place of doxycycline [b/c doxy was too harsh on my tummy] Any feedback on ceftin will help. thanks

Ceftin worked decently for me, but I took it with Doxy at the same time, for several months, so can't say for certain it was the Ceftin or Doxy that helped.

If I remember right, Ceftin is rather bitter, so just make sure to keep your tongue away (best you can) when swallowing the tablet.

1,000 isn't considered a high dosage for ceftin concerning lyme treatment. There are people who take 2,000mg or even 3,000mg daily.

Where did you read that it wasn't good to take it longer than 21 days? I try to read up on all medications I have before taking them, and never came across that. Though I don't think I would have given it thought if I did..

I am starting my 6th week since adding ceftin, and so far I really like it. The first few weeks were no fun for me though.

Last week I had two days where I felt well enough to go shopping with sis. First time I was really able to do that in 5 years!

Brownlymie..sounds like your doctors is not an LLMD (Lyme LIterate Doctor.)

Most LLMD's would combine Doxy with Ceftin as then you are treating 2 out of 3 forms of lyme.

Pretty sure that is a normal dose of Ceftin. I think that's what I took.

I'd guess the reason you weren't given both was because your belly couldn't tolerate Doxy, so Doxy + Ceftin would be even worse.

If you posted about Doxy/belly issues previously, I may have mentioned Doryx. If at some point in the future your doctor suggests Doxy, ask for Doryx instead. It's simply an enteric type of Doxy that is so much easier on the stomach. But some insurances won't pay for it (it's obscenely expensive).

Since it's spring/summer, it may not be the best time for Doxy anyway. You could always add it/change once Fall rolls around.

I took Ceftin with Zithromax for a few months

could you tell me why the zithromax and ceftin?

It will only work on the active 'chete (cell wall) form. It will NOT work on any of the other morphs.
1) cell wall-deficient form requires a macrolide (usually Biaxin or Zith)
2) cyst form requires Flagyl or Tindamax

If you only treat one form, the bugs will simply convert to the other morphs. Combo Tx is extremely important IMO.

I am taking Ceftin (2000mg) and that replaced the doxy I was originally taking (my LLNP felt ceftin is more effective than doxy).

I am also taking Rifampin and Flagyl. I am going into my 2nd month of Ceftin and will be on it until at least my next appt in about 5 weeks.

I actually liked doxy better than ceftin. It definitely has a taste so swallow it quickly.

I had no problems w/ doxy but since starting the ceftin I am feeling more fatigue. It may have nothing though to do w/ the ceftin. Could be just that I have been on meds for a few months now and it is all catching up to me.

Good luck!

See the unfortunate thing is my doctor will not perscribe two antibx as he is not super knowledgeable about this disease. I feel stuck, I dont have alot of money & my insurance wont cover most doctor visits other than my current doctor.

I was taking Doxy and Ceftin for about 7 months. My doc increased me up to 1000mg daily of Ceftin. At one point I accidentally took 2000mg of Ceftin and it knocked me flat for a few days- I was SO exhausted until I went back to 1000mg daily.

I'd read that it should be one or the other, not both, but I trusted what my Lyme friendly doc prescribed. The combination really worked for me. Now I'm treating coinfections... fun! [Frown]

Good luck to you!
