I'm taking HH Zhang houtouynia for bart and it is expensive. Any ideas as to how it compares to the 1shchineseherbs product?
http://www.1stchineseherbs.com/houtuynia.html

Zhang says:
Proprietary extract of: 250mg of Houttuynia cordata THUNB. entire plant.

1stchineseherbs says concentrated powder. Wondering whether they are the same?

Anyone had intestinal irritation with this stuff?

Hi Sheryll
I do not know my Chinese herbs or your product you are referring to. HOwever let me respond generically:

THe difference between an extract in alchohol, and a powdered extract, is that the one has alchohol and the other does not. Further, the powder is often more concentrated (the ratios of concentration should be shown on the bottle) and they are less likely to irritate the stomach lining due to absence of alchohol. Unless, of course, the herbs themselves are irritating you, which is rare by the way.

I am always the first to disclose herb side effects, am not at all shy about it. Most herbs do not irritate the stomach, with only a very few exceptions. Very, very few in fact.

But that doesn't mean it can't happen, and that doesn't mean that we lyme patients also aren't more sensitive to a lot of things that most people wouldn't be.

I can't tell you what is the culprit here.

You can look up the Bensky and Gamble Chinese Materia Medica, it may even be online? Don't know but it's supposed to be really good. Maybe in the library?

Have you tried marshmallow root or meadowsweet alongside as stomach lining anti-inflammatories? Deglycerinated licorice root? Ask your doctor or practitioner about this before you do it.

Best wishes, CI

I believe Zhang's is more concentrated than 1st chinese herbs.
When I was taking HH I wondered the same thing. Someone pointed out to me that Zhang's Houtynia (SP) tastes absolutely wretched, like dead fish. 1st Chinese does not. It is different.

This person also said he located the company in China selling it but you had to buy enormous amounts of it. But Zhang's mark up was huge. Frustrating, isn't it?

If it makes any difference it did not cure me. I was taking up to 20 HH capsules a day. I started with 12 and when the HH-2 came out, which is twice as strong, upped to 10.

But I was diagnosed without a test because I was told the strains in this state do not test. Last Nov. when I finally tested, I was negative for bart. After doing Bactrim for nearly a year, those symptoms subsided.

Supposedly Zhang houttuynia is 9 times concentrated whereas the other is five times. But there seems to be a bigger difference as you could just take twice as much and it would still be cheaper and just as effective. However it isn't.

Zhang's houttuynia tastes like dead fish. It is potent. The other does not taste unpleasant at all. It is completely different. Try it and see for yourself. Zhang's will make you gag.

Does Zhang's cure bartonella? Not for me and I took up to 20 capsules a day for 8 months. Neither does the 1st Chinese herbs. It would work best taken with an antibiotic - like Bactrim DS or Rifampin.
