Has anyone used a "Natural" Repellant for kids that REALLY WORKS??
Trying to avoid chemicals since I apply it everyday on their skin.... through out the spring and summer months.
I've read some articles that Citrus and or Garlic is a natural repellent for ticks and Mosquitos??
anyone try making/using these natural repellents? with any success?? or is this just nonsense??

My lyme doc suggests Avon Skin So Soft Mosquito, Flea, and Deer Tick Repellant Lotion. It is safe and non-toxic.
He also said to come into the house, put all your clothes in the dryer on High setting (to kill any ticks on them--they can't stand to be dried out, but they survive the washing machine with no problem) for 30 minutes, and jump into the shower immediately.
This way, you will brush off or notice any ticks on your body.

I've also heard "Repel Lemon Eucalyptus" is very good. You can get it at Target, Walmart, and online.
We have used it and it does work but it has a strong odor.
We reapplied it more often than the bottle said to though.
I recently made some spray for our dogs that consists of 3 drops of citronella oil, 2 drops geranium oil and 2 drops of peppermint oil in a 6 oz bottle mixed with water.
It's keeping flies, mosquitoes and fleas away. I haven't seen any ticks around either. Plus it makes them smell nice. Posted by penguingirl (Member # 28688) on :

Haha - too funny. I just pictured your dog in the dryer.
I bought the Repel guard too - haven't used it yet but I dont' care if I smell as long as it doesn't bother me.
I also have Avon spray too. As well as Permethrin for clothes. I am armed and ready to go.
Oh but I won't have any protection from my hair -do ticks like to crawl up trees and then fall down? I don't do any gardening (live in city) but since I have black hair, I have no way of telling and I know some people on lymenet have been bit on their scalp.
Maybe I can just spray the repel in my hair..

a mixture of essential oils of tea tree oil, eucylaptus, mixed into a runny aloe vera lotion
My doc told me to use this and it has worked
equal parts tea tree oil, eucylaptus, and then put into a spray bottle and add the aloe vera lotion -shake it up and spray

Natural bug/tick repellents that are also being advertised as ok for kids' use are listed at www.homs.com (I have no financial affiliation). Looks like a mix of essential oils plus some derived from a wild tomato plant.
Has anyone used any of these products?

penguin girl (and everyone else): use a hat for your hair. Yes, it is common to get ticks on your scalp.
I got bitten again there Memorial Day weekend 2 years ago. Horrible! I got a bad relapse, even though I was quite sick as it was, was on IV and started doxy within less than 2 days. It was another Babesia exposure!
Do use permithrin on clothes---very important! And be religious about daily, complete tick checks.
