I know that low thyroid is not only common for Lyme, but chronic illness in general. My LLMD explained it as a mechanism of our bodies, that when faced with a chronic infection the thyroid slows down in order to force the body to conserve energy. This is my very simple understanding of what he explained. I am also on a thyroid supplementation.

Does it generally go back to functioning normally after treatment? I am hypothyroid as well, since this past summer when I became symptomatic, and I am wondering if this is something that will eventually resolve, or will I have to be on thyroid meds forever?

Have your pituitary checked. I had high prolactin levels and hypothyroid and the ended up having to remove a pituitary tumor. This was 15 years pre-lyme.
