Saw my LLMD for the first time today. Said I most definitley hvae LD and the Doxy the ID doc put me on before would have done NOTHING for me, as recent bloodwork shows an active infection.

He put me on Amox, 4 to 5 months of it at 8 pills a day. Just wondering if anyone has had luck with this at all? Thank you.

TF got well on Amoxy, Probenecid and Flagyl. (for lyme)

She also treated Bartonella and Babesia after the lyme treatment.

Yes, I got rid of lyme using amoxicillin. You are to take probinecid with the amoxi to keep it from being filtered out of your blood so quickly. That is standard.

I took 1,500 mg of amoxi 3 times per day. So, if you are taking 500 mg capsules, that is 9 capsules per day.

I hope you are taking the amoxi 3 times per day along with probinecid. Try to take the amoxi at even intervals. (If 3 times per day, then that is every 8 hours. If 2 times per day, every 12 hours.) This way, it keeps the level of the med evenly high in your bloodstream.

Then, for the last few months of your amoxi treatment, the doc should add in flagyl or another med that kills lyme in the cyst form.

You see, after so long of just being on amoxi, the lyme will change into cyst form which amoxi can't kill. The flagyl will kill it in the cyst form.

Also, you will have to take other meds to treat coinfections.

In general, being on only one medication at a time (called "monotherapy") is not considered good lyme treatment. That is because of the various forms that lyme can take. No one med can kill lyme in all its forms. Also, you need coinfection treatment, some of which can be done at the same time as lyme treatment.

If you have not read the Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines, I suggest you do. This way you will understand what good lyme treatment looks like. Take an active role in learning about the disease that you have and how it is treated and it will reward you immensely.

For example, read "Combination Therapy" on page 12 of the Guidelines:

I am on amoxy since two months and it helps me - my lesions are clearing up. Throbbing and vibrating is less.

I only take 500 mg three times and then mix another 1,000 in a cream which I use on the skin.
I will try to add malarone as a cyst buster - soon.

The amoxy makes me so tired I could not use more or the cyst buster for now.

TF I will also try to slowly go up to 9 caps a day and also google the probinecid.

I am also on parasite treatment and think the amoxy is a good combination. Others like Ketek is too much risk for me now.
I like flagyl, so I always can kill the cysts later.
TF did you take malarone?

I never took malarone or mepron.

TF, it is supposed to be a cyst buster for me.
I get it instead of flagyl and will give it a try. The amoxy is working. Put my cream today on the carotids and the neck and behind the ear, got headache and feel sick.

Amoxy is good--tried and true..just have to use higher sustained dosing like TF says...

Thank you so much all for your replies! i definitely need to google some of the words used. lol. Never heard of probinecid. TF- my doc put me on 2 capsules 4 times a day. They are 500mg. So in total I'm taking 4000 mg a day..WOW. Seems likes so much. Anyways, he never once mentioned taking it with anything else. Also he said this would be a 4 to 5 month long treatment. (with amox) and said there are over 200 strands of lyme and if the amox didnt work then we would try something else. Im guessing he doesnt want to try too much since i am a younger single working mother of two small children. So maybe he is taking it easy on me. I definitley need to find some time to do more lyme homework. thanks again everyone.. sorry to anyone who may have trouble reading this. im using the internet on my phone and it will not let me do any spacing...

I tolerate Amoxy so well I wonder if its even working for me. Im on 4,000 mg a day but with NO probenicid. Is this even worth taking if I have no probenicid?

I took 7000 mg for years, worked well.

I googled the probenicid and I do not know if I want the uptake delayed. My kidneys and urethers are very much infected and I would prefer if they get much of the amoxy.
Not sure if I understand what the benefit of probenicid is, will try to ask my doc.

Probenecid keeps the Amoxy concentration in the blood higher over an extended period of time

I used amox. after several months of doxy. I did not use probenecid as I had a bout of renal failure last summer(not related to Lyme) I do believe, for me, it is what pushed me into remission. Now, during that 2mo on amox(875mg doses), I also did a week of Zith, and was taking OLE as well. So...it can work for some people [Smile]

From page 14 of Burrascano Guidelines:

"Because of its short half-life and need for high levels, amoxicillin is usually administered along with probenecid. An extended release formulation of amoxicillin+clavulanate (Augmentin XR) may also be considered if adequate trough levels are difficult to attain."

How about if you are taking it with doxy/amoxy and tindimax-do you still need the probenecid?

Posted by Lymeorsomething (Member # 16359) on :

You don't necessarily need Probenecid but it will complement the Amoxy nicely. If you are running Amoxy in a multi-lyme med protocol, it may not be quite as important. Plus probenecid may exacerbate sides from other drugs.

raw vegan runner,

would that mean the probenecid is not very good for kidneys?

beths,
some people say doxy and amoxy are not good together, eliminating the effect.

Probenecid has sulfa in it. It made me sick and I don't take it any longer. Still take the Amoxy, though.

Amox is good for lyme but it has to be in high doses to pass the BBB. Best taken with a macrolide and tini or flagyl.
