My doc is talking about trying gentamicin for bart----i have tried levaquin (lasted 7 days & back of my legs hurt so bad i could barely walk), rifampin plus doxy, ceftin & biaxin and nothing has stopped it. Has anyone else been treated with gentamicin? The vetnarians (sp.) say it kills Bart very effectively in dogs. I have read it is a very effective abx but also can be toxic to the ears & kidneys. All responses are appreciated.

I took it for a couple weeks. It really helped.

Side effects can be permanent and severely disabling so you do need to be aware. If you experience any vertigo, loss of balance, bouncing vision, ringing in the ears, etc you will need to stop the med and contact your doctor immediately.

Your doctor will prescribe the dose based on your current weight. They will watch your labs closely, trough and peak levels to monitor the dose along with the metabolic panel to monitor kidney function.

The dosing schedule (every 8hrs) was difficult to follow. Felt like I was constantly infusing something. It is very important though to take this medication on schedule to keep your blood levels where they should be.

For me the benefits outweighed the risks. That is a decision you and your doctor need to make together.

Good luck.
