My daughter starting getting IV rocephin 2 months ago three times a week. We went in for a checkup and we decided on her getting a picc line...her veins are getting crappy due to the IV's.
After her appt she went in to get her IV and had a horrible reaction to the rocephin. Her face and neck started to swell, her face and ears became fire red and she had hives all over and was itching like crazy.
They gave her a shot of benadryl and also two shots of steroids. It was scary. Why after two months of her taking rocephin is this just happening now? She is off all meds for a week and hasn't really had symptoms...some leg exhaustion, jaw pain and irritability.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? I'm wondering what they are going to put her on next. Any thoughts?

Strange. A very similiar thing happened to my daughter. She was getting IV rocephin in the Drs office for about two weeks. I wanted to make sure that she could handle the drug BEFORE we put the PICC line in. Got home health nurses all organized and she statred getting the rocephin at home through the PICC. After 4 days, she developed a severe allergic reaction to the Rocephin. Horrible Symptoms! Throat would close- couldnt breath, would scream in pain! Very scary.
Had to have the PICC line removed days later (she went through all that for nothing!)
Dont know why all of sudden she developed a reaction? Dr said that sometimes it can take weeks or even months to develop a reaction?
Me personally... and I AM NO DR!!! think it had more to do with the fact that the rocephin was now going through the PICC and was so much closer to the heart- medicine got pumped into the body more quickly than just doing it from an IV line in the arm?

Wow, so sorry this has happened to both your daughters...
For a week now, I've been experiencing a feeling that my 'throat is closing.' My dr. wasn't really sure if this could be an allergic reaction or not, but after reading your posts, I'm thinking I should stop the medication..
jjbc - what did they do for your poor daughter when she experienced this??

I don't know how it works for medicine .... but I know my shellfish allergy developed and got worse over the consecutive exposures. Might work the same with meds.

Detoxing is very important otherwise the liver and other organs become overwhelmed especially with abx like Rocephin.

I had a penicillan allergy years ago but passed a skin test for it recently so I thought I'd be fine to start rocephin - wrong!!! I got a horrible rash, itching, red, painful. It would come on like fire during the infusion. It mostly centered in my butt, of all places.
I had been dxd with ALS so rocephin was essential for me to take. My llmd patiently increased the dosage and I took zantac, benadryl cream and or oral, anything that would work.
Eventually, my body desensitized and the rash got less and less. I was on rocephin for 9 months until I developed a staph infection in my picc line and also c.difficile.
It was still worth it, however. I think it slowed down the ALS and I hope I can go back on it someday.
