pointed out my stained teeth to my LLMD. he said Amoxy and Biaxin do not discolor teeth. he gave me Intenzyme Forte to break up the biofilm.

did a quick search and found mention of biofilm staining teeth but no real info. anybody familar with this?

also, besides going to the dentist for a cleaning, is there any way to get rid of the stains?

My stained teeth were quickly fixed by a regular cleaning at my dentist.

My dentist said she sees this all the time in kids on long term amoxicillin for ear infections.

Amox/Zith combo definitely stained my teeth.

Doxy has stained my teeth in the past. Using Crest Pre Brush Whitening Rinse helped a LOT.

Best, Timaca

Stained teeth I just went through..dentist just polished it off. It is not from abx he told me just from drinking tea (green tea) and I have dry mouth due to the abx...so I use biotene now.

so we seem to have 2 views forming on this.

what color were the stains on your teeth? mine are brown, not the yellowish that people talk about with children having stained teeth from abx. for the record I do not drink coffee or tea and do not smoke.

also waiting to hear from anyone familar with the biofilm staining teeth theory.

Timaca, I will try the Crest PBWR.

Rifampin stained my teeth. It was terrible. But Rifampin makes your body fluids oragne/brown so that is probably why.

My teeth got brown and stained. As was said a dental cleaning took care of it without any problems.

Not sure which ABX did it but I was on a lot of amox, zitho and biaxin and mepron, tini, etc., etc., etc., and on and on!

The 'normal' bacteria in your mouth along with the antibiotics will stain your and everyone's teeth whatever color you 'carry'... we all can have either yellowish tint or brownish... dna decides what your 'stain' color is for you.

Biofilm really isn't the issue with stain, I've been in dentistry for years and years....

It's the good and bad bacteria in your mouth that stains teeth.. whether you're a coffee drinker or not.

Some build up more than others.

Try brushing your teeth with a light abrasive at home... baking soda and such. Other than that... a prof. cleaning is what is needed.

Biaxin stained my teeth - that is a common side effect. Went away after I stopped abx.

High doses of Vit C helps

hadlyme- would baking soda toothpaste work?

Lauralyme- how high of a dose of Vit C?

I guess my next question is do I need the Intenzyme Forte?

thanks for all the replies.

I had a LOT of tooth staining. It didn't help that I was wearing braces for much of my treatment. Mine were almost black. My dentist said it was from the change in mouth bacteria.

It just scraped off, but they allowed extra time for my cleanings.

My dentist was surprised that it wasn't tetracyclines doing the staining, he had never seen it from other abx. But then, consider the fact that tetras for acne are usually the only long term abx most dentists see.

Once off abx, my teeth are white again.

Biaxin does not stain teeth? Hum... It stained mine and both my LLMD and Dentist said stained teeth was a very common side effect of Biaxin.

My teeth are slowly going back to normal color.

My teeth have stained more noticeably in the past year. The dentist suggested cleanings every 3 to 4 months instead of every 6 months. Also, I bought an ultrasonic toothbrush. It cycles through 2 minutes (30 seconds per top front, top back, bottom front, bottom back). Has helped a lot.
