I just started ceftin and biaxin with good results..except for constant diarrhea. My Dr. wants me to stop abx and double up on priobotics for a few days. I am worried that my symptoms may return without the abx. Anyone else have a similar experience and what did you do? Thanks...

I had to take VSL#3 when I was on abx or I'd have diarrhea constantly.

Six, is that an over the counter thing, or from a Dr.?

Are you taking Florastor? It is a must

No Florastor, is that for stomach problems?

It's over the counter. You can order it online. Very high dose probiotic.

florastor is s boulardii, you need that, too.

Florastor prevents a type of dangerous diarrhea that can come from using a lot of antibiotics.

It's a beneficial yeast.

Excellent probiotics:

VSL#3

Theralac

Whatever you take, take at least 100 CFU's per day. Wish someone had told me that 10 yrs ago!

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

thanks everyone, I picked up some Florastor, and I'm currently taking Ortho Biotic from Dr. Is that a strong enough probiotic, of should I go to VSL#3 for something stronger. My main concern is if I stop taking abx for a few days until I'm going normally again, will that cause a return of symptoms which are just now starting to subside?

You can get a prescription from your doc for VSL#3 DS (double strength)

I love this stuff!

I had a terrible time on that combo, bummer for me because it's a good one. I couldn't get the D under contol. I take professional grade probiotics too. I am doing Bicillin 3x a week now and Doxy. This is a good combo for me, a lot of herxing going and no gut trouble. The sun is an issue though.

I am on that combo now along with mepron. Have been for months, All are high doses. Take 150 billion cfu's of Custom Probiotics brand and eat some yogurt daily. Have no problems.

I don't take florastor because twice I tried it and twice I got sick as a dog. I'm not trying to scare you, just thought it should be mentioned. Most don't seem to have any issues with it. Don't know if that was the cause but too chicken now to try again. Maybe someday [Smile]

I think lymetoo meant at least 100 billion cfu. (correct me on that if wrong lymetoo) One advantage to the VSL is insurance will often cover it according to a previous posting from her and others. That of course translates to less out of pocket expense.

The probiotics I take are 3 capsules a day which ends up costing me $40 a month. I don't want to switch at this point because they are working well for me.

I also take olive leaf extract. If I am not mistaken that helps with yeast also. Of course there is the other supps, mag, b12, vit d, ect ect.

I hope for your sake you can get it straightened out so you can get back on track with that combination. Did your doc mention starting at lower dose and working up to full dose? That in itself may give your body a chance to adjust. Just a thought.

Nothing above should be taken as medical advice,
just an opinion.

I used the VSL#3 packets which have 450 billion organisms. No prescription needed. You can compare that to what yours has.

I took the VSL#3, Theralac, Ultra Flora AND s. boulardii.

thanks again, I checked with my pharmacist and he said my bcbs won't cover VSL#3, I'll check with my LLMD about changing to that..probably not much more than the Ortho I'm currently taking.

I just googled your ortho biotic. It has 20 billion. That's significantly lower.

I was taking Theralac (30 billion) and Ultra Flora (15 billion) and it wasn't enough for me while on abx. They are high doses, like yours, but for me, it wasn't enough with the meds.

The best thing is probably to talk to your LLMD. [Smile]
