Hi, I was hoping to get a few opinions. I started Doxy about 8 weeks ago and I had no problem on it other than sun sensitivity. (even burned on cloudy days) My LLMD switched me to Minocycline. I took it for 2.5 days with no problem. Then I got a stomach ache. My daughter had a stomach ache the day before so I thought I just had a stomach bug. I was scheduled to begin Rifampin that day but I waited a day because of my stomach. The next morning it wasn't so bad so I started the Rifampin and took two doses before I realized I had better stop the antibiotics because I felt so sick. I had my typical herx feelings of fatigue, needle-like pains, brain fog, but the stomach ache really did me in. Really gassy and just yucky feeling.
So, I stopped all antibiotics for 1.5 days and my stomach felt better and I felt better overall. I started them again, beginning with the Rifampin. (no stomach probelms on just that) But three days into the Minocycline (3 days with no problems except sever heel/ankle pain- believe I haved Bartonella too) But on the fourth day (today) I'm sick to my stomach again but also have the other horrible herx symptoms, such as severe fatigue, needle pains, brain fog, forgetfulness.
Could the stomach ache be part of a herx reaction? It's not something I've read about. Would it take 2 or 3 days of Minocycline for a stomach ache to develop? I was perfectly fine for 3 days this time before it hit.
Or do you think its the drugs? I can't take Penecillian based antibiotics. I fry taking Doxy. The Rifampin alone seemed fine for the few doses I took alone. And the combo of Minocycline and Rifampin was fine for a few days.
What do you think?

Hi,
You know that's a tough one. I have been on meds for 13 months and to this day I still can't tell if I'm herxing or having side effects!! Whenever I start a new antibiotic I always get stomach upset for at least a week. This time I just doubled up my probiotics and did the Castor oil packs, so I'm thinking for me it's the side effects. But truthfully it's a fine line between herxing and side effects, at least for me it is.
My Pharmacist said IV Invanz should NOT give my diarrhea or stomach pains... but it did so what do I know.
Anyway, I'm just as puzzled as you are!

Hi, Sorry you are having pain.
Maybe try reducing the dosage of the Mino and work up slowly to full dose.

Thanks for the info. My dr. wants to switch me back to Doxy but then I can't go out in the sun at all. (super sensitive to it when on doxy) I'd like to try the Minocycline again, but the stomach ache memory is a little too fresh. I think I'll go back on the Doxy for a bit then try again in a week or two and take it slowly. I appreciate the input. Thanks. I stopped taking it last night and although my stomach hurt all day today, this evening I'm feeling better.

I agree - start at a lower dose and work your way up.
Also, are you taking any sort of probiotics? Long term abx can really throw off your stomach bacteria - both good and bad and can definitely cause pain.

I have stomach upset to i dont know also if its the abx Causing it or its really the infection itself is causing it.
