I just looked in the mirror to brush and floss and realized that my teeth are turning gray! It's really freaking me out. I am currently on Doxy, Rifampin, and pulsing Flagyl. I googled Doxy since I've been on it the longest and it said that is a rare side effect.
I can't take Penecillian based drugs due to an allergy. Now Doxy and Minocyline are likely out too. What is left to treat lyme? I am scared. I want to get better so badly, but I don't want horrible gray teeth. Do you know what other combos work for Lyme?
I just emailed my dr. I'll stop the doxy till I hear from her.

Is it down at the bottom of your teeth near your gums?

I get gray buildup around my gums and between my teeth. It is from the antibiotics. Your dental hygienist will be able to clean it off.
My dentist recommended the sonicare toothbrush and since I have been using it the gray build up isn't so bad. Might be something for you to consider.

I used a pre-brush whitening rinse. There are several brands out there and you can find them in the mouthwash section of Wal-Mart, Target or drug store. Swish the rinse in your mouth for a few seconds, spit it out, and brush your teeth normally. I couldn't use it everyday, for it made my teeth sensitive, but it did take care of the staining on my teeth from the antibiotics.
Best, Timaca

Rifampin turned my teeth brown. It was pretty gross. It took the dental hygenist an hour to clean it all off. My teeth are ok now. I use a whitening mouth wash and toothpaste.

Thanks everyone. I just needed to know its not permanant. I emailed my doc but haven't heard back yet. It's not the base of my teeth, but the opposite, like the tips. And they almost look more clear than they used to. And its a gray hue, not super horrible right now, but makes me worry.

I heard back from my dr. and she wanted me to see my dentist. I went and saw a different hygenist and she said I had a lot of plaque. I'm not used to having so much plaque and I think the difference between the milky white of the plaque and stained teeth just made them look gray in the light in my house. So anyway, the plaque may well be from the antibiotics. I've never had so much. After they scraped some off, they looked more normal, so I've stopped freaking out. I'm staying on the doxy and Rifampin for now and doing Flagyl just one day per week since I had such a bad herx last week on two days. Thanks everyone. Appreciate it!

My teeth turned grey, almost black. It can be scraped off at the dentist. It does come off when you get off the meds. It's due to the change in bacterial balance in your mouth.
