I developed hives yesterday. I wonder if starting and stopping zithro may have caused me to develop an allergy to it. I don't know what else it could be. It is all over my body and I have not eaten anything unusual.

I am going to stop it to see if it goes away. I take it with Malarone. If that is what it is, any other suggestions of what I can take instead? I had to sop taking Biaxin because it started to make my mouth so dry I literally could not talk. Come to think of it I was having a dry mouth problem the last couple of days.

It has gotten worse. Huge red welts all over my body - even my scalp. I know zithro stays in the body 72 hours. It is very itchy!
I am off all meds until it clears. I hope it is not malarone.

This is what happened.

"Direct sunlight (UV) exposure should be minimized during therapy with azithromycin. Photosensitivity has been reported as an allergic reaction to azithromycin. Azithromycin should be discontinued at the first sign of erythema."

I was working out in the sun in the heat. It made me feel very sick. The next day I noticed the rash. Then I was out in the sun again!
TG I found this out.

I had hives too after about 4 months of minocycline and Levaquin. Guess what? It was the beginning of the yeast infection growing in my bladder, intestines, and finally the brain. I was crying and had severe anxiety.. I wanted them to kill me. Diflucan eased it but I am still fighting it to the point where I went off all meds until the testing comes back clean. No yeast. Next week I have to go back to llmd and I will decide to go back on meds with preventative antifungal. My doc forgot to put me on one to begin with. I was so sick. Please don't let that happen to you. I went to dermatologist for cream for the itch, that's it. No one knew why I got it. I did the research and I did the diagnosis. I asked for meds and he gave me 10 day nystatin, then diflucan, the ket. 400mg. still fighting.
Good luck and let me know.
Kerry

That is really awful Kerry. I have not had trouble with yeast lately, knock on wood. I had bad yeast last year and had to quit abx for a month during which time the babesia took over. I eat a lot of plain yogurt now and a low glycemic index diet.

The welts are starting to subside now. I also read I will be allergic to any macrolide after this.
