I just developed an allergy to zithro. I am covered with hives. I read this means I can't take any macrolide.

What else can I take with Malarone? Is is important to take something with it, like it is with Mepron to prevent resistance?

I can't do doxy because of the summer sun.

Thanks

Most LLMD's think malarone should be combined with artemisinin.

Other possibilities would be lariam, bactrim DS, clindamycin or flagyl.

Thanks Bea. I do take artesunate with it when I am not taking rounds of Coartem, which contains arthemeter, another derivitive of artemesia.

I took Bactrim DS for about a year and the effect on babs wore off. Does nothing for me now but gives me insomnia.

I am finding information that you can take clindamycin when you are allergic to azithromycin. I will ask the doctor. Thanks

My LLMD paired it with Ceftin since I too am allergic to Zith.

Malarone doesn't need a macrolide like Mepron does because it's already two drugs. I did take it with Lariam myself. Also with many other meds.

I would personally take artemisia, and did all through babesia treatment.

Thanks for the other suggestion Starfall. I worry about clindamycin causing bad GI problems.

Six, from what I have read, babesia needs to be treated with both anti-malarial and antibiotic drugs at the same time. The second drug in malarone, proquinal, is also an anti-malarial. I am afraid babesia could build resistance if I don't take it with abx.
