Was minding my own business when I came down with very sharp pains below my ribs. Hard to breathe deeply and pretty near impossible to sneeze. Thought I broke a rib, but haven't exerted myself in that way.
Went to primary care doc and he diagnosed me with pleurisy. Anyone know the real cause of this?
Thanks!

Get checked for mycoplasma pneumonia... I threw up blood and was diagnosed with both pleurisy and mycoplasma pneumonia don't know if they were related?

Also, check to see if it is the rib itself. I have costochondritis, which was my first symptom.

The same treatment for pleurisy would also treat costochondritis(inflammation in the rib cage). Anti-inflammatory for both. Aspirin worked well for me once when I had pleurisy. When I got lyme, I started having costochondritis.

My doc recommended Advil every 4 hrs.

I don't know. I had it as a kid when I got pneumonia. I thought it was just a severe case of pneumonia. Sounds like it might have another cause for you. I still count it in the top 2 or 3 worst pains I've ever felt (and none of my top ones involved childbith - who woulda thought).

I can have pleurisy without pneumonia. For me I had always thought it went along with my lupus diagnosis. Now it is probably a Lyme thing but pleurisy and inflammation went together for me.
Interestingly, my sister, also with Lyme gets pleurisy.
