I couldn't get to my doctor and ran out of Ceftin-- so I switched to Amoxi which I had in the cupboard.
My back spasms are back... maybe I'm taking too low a dose of Amoxi?
I've got another 10 days until I get to the doctor.
I remember something about taking Probenicid to make Amoxi work better.
If I don't have Probenicid, will a PPI like Prilosec do the same thing?
Thanks. Mary

Your doctor might be willing to call in a refill, most do.

Prilosec will not act like probinecid. Without the probinecid, the amoxi is out of your body in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. That is its half life.
It takes continuous high levels of amoxi in the blood to work against lyme. So, your amoxi alone is useless. The probinecid keeps the body from filtering the amoxi out of the blood. I have never heard of anything else that can do that.
Burrascano says the dose of amoxi must be at least 1,000 mg every 8 hours and that up to 6,000 mg every 8 hours is sometimes necessary. I took closer to the 6,000 mg every 8 hours, with the probenicid. That's how I beat lyme--combined it with flagyl.
So, call and ask doc's office to call in more Ceftin for you. Sometimes your pharmacy will call the doc for you and get you more.

Does anybody know if probenecid or a related med would be useful to take with ceftin?

From page 14 of Burrascano Guidelines:
"Cefuroxime axetil (Ceftin), a second generation agent, is also effective against staph and thus is useful in treating atypical erythema migrans that may represent a mixed infection that contains some of the more common skin pathogens in addition to Bb. Because this agents G.I. side effects and high cost, it is not often used as first line drug. As with the penicillins, try to achieve high, sustained blood and tissue levels by frequent dosing and/or the use of probenecid. Measure peak and trough blood levels when possible."
