Someone told me insulin spikes can cause this, so make sure you are watching your sugar intake and eating high-protein snacks between meals.
Also, I have discovered that GABA (taken in the evening) helps me a lot with anxiety and racing thoughts.

Yes, this is anxiety. This is what I had. Too many thoughts.
Psychiatrist called it an agitated depression and put me on zoloft. It worked wonderfully!
Woke up the next day with just a normal amount of thoughts. I had peace of mind. I no longer worried about every crazy possible thing, etc.
He was amazed it worked so quickly on me. I was so happy!
Get help. This is a terrible way to have to exist.
Posted by tricia386 (Member # 29623) on :
TF did you have scary thoughts also, or start questioning things in life?
are u still on zoloft now?
Posted by TF (Member # 14183) on :
This happened to me in menopause. I took the zoloft for 9 months and then I didn't need it anymore.
Before I knew I had lyme, I had just plain anxiety. The gyn gave me xanax for that. It was more like panic attacks or attacks of anxiety at first. Eventually, it was continual anxiety.
Then, I found out I had lyme and started getting treatment and the anxiety went away.
With lyme, I got very odd thoughts some times. That may be what you are referring to.

I don't know how long you have been suffering from these symptoms, but if it continues for more than a few weeks than I would consider treating it medically - as in a psychiatric med.

ya its been a few weeks...will it ever go away

I am scared to take those meds. I am scared of side effects and getting addicted
Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :
I highly recommend 5-HTP for anxiety issues. It's been shown in every side-by-side trial to beat all of the common prescription anxiolytics and antidepressants, plus it usually has no side effects for most people.
5-HTP is completely un-addictive, you can stop it at any time, and it starts working VERY quickly (most people notice big benefits within the first week).
I highly recommend 300mg of 5-HTP a day. I've read an entire book on that supplement alone, and that's what the experienced doctors recommend.
Posted by tricia386 (Member # 29623) on :
where do I buy it?
Posted by TF (Member # 14183) on :
Antidepressants are NOT addictive. They help anxiety. So, don't worry about taking that class of drugs.
Xanax can be addictive, although it wasn't for me. I took it for quite a few years when I had lyme.

At most places that carry natural supplements, including your local stores.
I would take one pill 3 times a day. It's IMPOSSIBLE to overdose at that amount (even twice the amount is usually safe).
It's best to take it after meals so that it doesn't lower your appetite before the meals. If you take it 20 minutes before a meal, it'll help you to eat less (if you're trying to lose weight).

so does this help anxiety and depression? I'm thinking about telling my sister about this who has no insurance and can't afford doctors and pills right now.
Thanks so much for your help.

For depression use omega 3 fish oils!
Our Pharmacist says most depression is caused by a lack of omega 3's.
I'd use natural supplements before trying meds for anxiety. The meds can cause other unwanted side effects. (one of them messed up my hubby's thyroid)

YES! I can't stress enough how wonderful this supplement is.
The book is inexpensive, and it's a good read. Numerous side-by-side trials have shown that 5-htp is more effective than all of the popular prescription anti-depressant and anxiolytic drugs, has no side effects for most people, starts working faster, and is non addictive.
There is a LOT of ignorance about this wonderful supplement. Even some good naturopaths don't realize it's benefits. I highly recommend you read the book if you have any doubts about it.
You can get a free sample of the beginning of the ebook from Amazon.
If anybody has any personal questions about 5-htp, please feel free to PM me. I wish more people would be aware of this wonderful supplement, which is very powerful and a life-changer.

Anybody else reporting good effects from this?

Here's more info on 5-HTP from Gematria products. You can visit their website and get more info.
"Vitamin B-6 is a cofactor for the enzyme that degrades toxic tryptophan metabolites. Since the enzyme that converts 5-HTP into serotonin also needs B-6, this vitamin should regularly be taken on the same day as 5-HTP, but at least 6 hours before 5-HTP consumption. This preliminary use of B-6 before 5-HTP both helps to prevent the accumulation of toxic tryptophan metabolites and delays somewhat the rise in plasma levels of serotonin (from 5-HTP). No additional B-6 is needed beyond that obtained in a typical B-vitamin pill or a minimum of 10 mg per day
Alcohol effects the metabolism of 5-HTP. Therefore, persons who have taken 5-HTP should not drink alcohol within six (6) hours of its use. Persons with liver damage should not use 5-HTP. For example, those who are chronic alcoholics, or intravenous drug users, or who have cirrhosis, hepatitis or parasitic infections should not use 5- HTP. Experimental 5-HTP use in animals -- at the same time that liver toxic drugs were administered -- produced heart fibrosis. 5-HTP administration alone did not produce this effect. Malnourished African persons who consume serotonin-rich foods and have heart fibrosis also probably have liver damage induced by chronic viral hepatitis and parasites like malaria. Therefore, drugs that damage the liver -- and probably effect tryptophan metabolism -- such as cancer chemotherapies and powerful antibiotics, should not be used at the same time as 5-HTP.
Since serotonin is involved in the constriction of blood vessels and the clotting of blood by platelets, it should not be used in persons at risk of heart disease or strokes or who have high blood pressure. Its use in elderly persons should be under the supervision of a physician, especially those individuals receiving L-dopa for Parkinson's disease. Persons with severe allergies should not use 5-HTP. Persons who have previously experienced either flushing of the skin should not take it or diarrhea with it use. If 5-HTP induces nausea, the dosage should be reduced or, if symptoms persist, its use discontinued entirely.
The effect of 5-HTP on fetuses and in pregnant women has not been investigated clinically; therefore its use during pregnancy is contraindicated. Lastly, persons driving an automobile or operating machinery should not consume 5-HTP within six hours prior to that activity. 5-HTP can potentate the effects of certain tranquilizing drugs and alcohol. "
Since babesia is like malaria, does that mean we shouldn't take 5-Htp if we have babs?
I need something to help my anxiety and I don't handle RX's well. I suspect I have Babesia, but 5-HTP should work for those who do not.

It's amazing how they make 5-htp sound like a toxic drug. The studies show that less than 10% have any side-effects to 5-htp, and those side effects are usually mild. On the contrary, 80%-90% of patients have side-effects to the prescription SSRIs.
You have to read the article closely in order to see that they're talking about very unique situations. 1) First they're talking about experimental use in animals ALONG WITH liver toxic drugs. They don't explain what "experimental use" means, nor do they state which "liver toxic drugs" were used and in what quantity.
2) They say that when 5-htp was given to the animals alone without the liver toxic drugs, there was no "heart fibrosis".
3) Next they talk about "Malnourished Africans" who have a serotonin-rich diet AND have heart fibrosis, and they make a wild guess about those persons probably having "chronic viral hepatitis and parasites like malaria." Read the sentence that begins with "Malnourished African persons" closely, and you'll see that they say "probably have liver damage", so basically all of it is just speculation. It doesn't actually say anything about 5-htp and malaria. (It's doesn't even say anything about malaria, either, because they were just hypothesizing, and they didn't run any tests).
So, basically, if you are African, malnourished, eat serotonin-rich foods (which is actually a misnomer, and should be called "tryptophan-rich foods", since no foods actually contain serotonin), AND have heart fibrosis... then you might possibly have "chronic viral hepatitis and parasites like malaria." Not only does this not say anything useful to most of us, but it certainly doesn't say anything about 5-htp.
So, in my humble opinion, I don't think you should worry about it.

Thanks, James. I was pretty disappointed when I read that. I had taken an 5-Htp this morning. I only slept 3 1/2 hours last night, and I was ready to jump in with your protocol. It sometimes is so hard to think straight with this disease. Everything is so controversial.

Cheryl let me know how it works for you. Do you have bad anxiety as well...

No problem, babe. Anytime.

Tricia, yes, my anxiety and insomnia are now becoming my worst symptoms. It started when I relapsed in April. I had achieved 90% functioning and then bam!
I just went for a twenty minute walk since the weather is so beautiful today. The sun finally came out. Had to walk off that anxiety. I also work full time now, and that's sometimes stressful, too, especially when you only get a few hours sleep.
James, thanks for understanding.

I was on zith this summer for two months and sobbed every day. Within 5 days of stopping it, the dark depression lifted. I WILL NEVER take that med again.
I see you are taking mepron which will give you the "mepron blues." I take malarone which has mepron in it, so maybe that's what is causing our anxiety.
Maybe, you can switch to malarone. It has proguanil (sp?) which also suppresses babs. I don't think it is quite as depressing as mepron. CHANGE THE DOSE OR CHANGE THE DRUG.
Posted by tricia386 (Member # 29623) on :
i was already on Malarone took that for 3 months switched to Mepron and I had to come off I was a crying mess...it was bad. I am currently off al meds since weds. and i have a phone consult with my LLMD on Tuesday

Good Tricia. Drink lemon or lime water to wash the meds out of your system.
Maybe, cryptolepsis might be an option or even Zhang's art. OR maybe, you just have to pulse. Zith is a nasty drug, too, for some people.
