I thought the problem was that you could not take the 2 drugs at the same time. One affects the absorption of the other.

I don't see any problems with taking either drug at any point in time as long as they are not both being taken at the same time.

Hubby has taken rifampin in the past and is currently taking malarone which has mepron in it as one of the 2 ingredients.

Actually I do think some docs may prescribe malarone and rifampin together, but the blood levels will be less and the drugs might not work as well.

My LLMD recently prescribed Rifabutin with my Malarone.

THe issue with Rifampin is it speeds up the clearance of Atovaquone in Mepron..meaning there is less Atovaquone in the body...meaning it is less effective on Babesia. I believe the Atovaquone may also increase the amount of Rifampin in the body as well.

Rifabutin / Mycobutin appears to be a bit better.

I know a few people who have taken these drugs together.

Personally, I would take it with malarone as at least it has Proguanil which isn't affected by Rifabutin / Rifampin.

i took both Mepron and Rifampin concurrently.

I started feeling lousy, so don't know if it was from adding Rifampin, or the reduction of Mepron absorbed.
