My practitioner looked at my fingernails and immediately noticed that I didn't have white "moons" at the bases of them. She said this shows a problem with mineral imbalances (she didn't specify further).
Does anyone know what it would mean if someone didn't have "moons" on the fingernails? Are they supposed to be on every nail? Right now I only have them on the thumbs, but they're large there.

When I got sick and undiagnosed for a year. I noticed my moons disappeared on all my nails but thumbs. I kept telling all doctors this because changes in fingernails, skin, hair ect.. can signify certain medical conditions.
ALL the doctors I saw completely ignored it. I still don't have my moons back and I would LOVE to know exactly what this means so I can fix the problem.

I used to only have moons on my thumbs. As I've worked on rebuilding my body through exercise and replenishing the things that were drained by illness, they've now come back on my first two fingers, but still not my ring finger or pinkie.

It's funny because just the other day I was thinking about this! I used to have large semi-circles on the base of my fingernails, but they have gone away in the last 6 months. This is when I have been the sickest, so I am pretty sure it is an indicator of something.

Absent half moons Pituitary problems or poor circulation.
I was told the moons disappear when one is deficient in Vitamin B12. I've lost all the moons on my fingers (noticed this a long time ago) but the ones on my thumbs are still there. I was diagnosed with severe Vitamin B12 deficiency and cannot absorb any orally, must get shots. I don't know if this is why my moons are gone or if there is another reason, but nutritional imbalance makes sense to me - whether it's minerals, B vitamins or something else.

This is a very interesting topic! Thanks for the info.
The first one is definitely much bigger than the others.

James,
You are TOO stinkin' funny

I have all on my right hand e felt my pinky. I have all on my left except for ring and pinky...except my left hand ones are a bit "thinner".
Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :
I noticed this too. I only have very pale moons on my thumbs. Usually when you are young and healthy you will have moons on all your fingernails except the pinkie.
It can be caused by low thyroid or B12 deficiency. They also disappear when you age.
Other signs are weak brittle nails and ridges. White spots indicate mineral deficiency too - zinc I think, which is very important for proper functioning of the immune system.

I'm here busting a gut (reading James' post) and my husband walks in. "What's so funny?"
So I show him. I'm choking to hold in the belly laughs.
He looks, turns around and walks away, never cracks a smile.
He says, "Oh yeah, when DS and I went up Mt. Washington last month, they mooned us on the cog train."
Who did?
"A bunch of hikers. Apparently they do it all the time."
Really? Where have I been?

I'm as old as dirt, so that explains it ... though I'm not as old as either Tutu or Tincup, they're older than dirt!!
(James, I didn't see that ....)

What? There was no nudity in that picture at all! There's more nudity in a G-rated Disney movie!
I'd like to hear what Lymetoo says about it. Lymetoo is as clean as a whistle! Posted by Dogsandcats (Member # 28544) on :
that picture is taken in SO California. The people get there SO early to line up. There wasn't even parking - so I have been told - last year and police turned people away....they were so bummed.
I hate crowds....and the no parking would tip me over the top.....

I was tested for B12, and my pituitary is fine. It must be mineral but we have yet to establish exactly what. Im young and I had strong white moons before getting sick.
Lyme1234-if you find out from your doctor, please post it!

I used to have half moons on all my fingers, but sometime after I got bit (also middle age), it went down to just my thumbs, but now they're gone completely.
I vaguely remember Dr Oz said it was because as we age we lack the ability to absorb nutrients like we did when we were younger, and the nails are something that a good doctor typically looks at when a patient comes in with something (sorry can't remember what though. Must be lyme brain.
I kind of feel since lyme and company typically depletes nutrients/minerals from our bodies (Vit B-12, vit D, magnesium, iodine, etc), we need even more than the, as of yet, unbitten folks do.
Posted by James1979 (Member # 31926) on :
Dear Lymetoo, Come on, honey. Why are you ignoring me? Why don't you give us your opinion on the picture?
It's clean, isn't it? Ain't nothin wrong with it, that's what I'm sayin.

Wow...who knew? I noticed missing moons years ago (assuming that ionce had them). I have more on my right hand than my left. We should take a poll... How many lymers have moons?
Posted by FYRECRACKER (Member # 28568) on :
I only have moons on my thumbs. My B12 levels are fine, my T3 is low, but I've been on thyroid meds for a while now and am around 3.0
WAIT! I have a tiny half moon on one of my index fingers after painfully shoving my cuticles back.
Maybe Oxygen is key as well. Sounds like thumb only moons are pretty common, or maybe being sick is common. Not sure.

Maybe iron has something to do with it too? How's everyones' iron (Red blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit). Mine are all low.

BAN me?! But you didn't even give me a warning!! That's not fair.
On other forums, they always gave me 2 or 3 infractions before they banned me.

No, I think we should keep him, he's entertaining.
Not sure about iron ..... I am anemic, but my ferritin is up in range now .... and the moons are coming back.

All of my blood tests are normal for everything! Unless it has something to do with adrenals or some sort of deficiency that is not picked up by blood tests.
Would low magnesium and B12 always show up on a blood test?
Posted by randibear (Member # 11290) on :
james it is a fine line you walk. be careful. some on here may think that's offensive. and it really is not lyme related. subject maybe but not lyme.

James, I thought that was hilarious and love your sense of humor! Thanks for the much needed laughs!
About blood tests: Not everything that can be tested yields an accurate result, especially when it comes to magnesium. An RBC magnesium test is better, but not perfect. Basically the only way to know you have enough magnesium is to take a supplement and see if known magnesium deficiency symptoms disappear.
Anemia: I've been chronically anemic for years, but my iron level is good now after getting overdosed with IV iron infusions...my Ferritin is extremely high though, and since this can be elevated with inflammation, that's the likely culprit in my case. Don't know why I'm anemic, but strongly suspect it has to do with Lyme/coinfections.
Having just recently been on IV nutrition (TPN) in which I received most required nutrients for 3 years, and still missing my moons on my fingers (they're only there on my thumbs), I have to wonder what it will take to restore my moons...

Oh yeah...forgot the topic! I have moons on all nails except ring fingers and pinkies.
Posted by Carol in PA (Member # 5338) on :
I think that lack of moons is a symptom of low B12.
I was surprised out of all those conditions of the nail, they did not mention leukodynia... the white spots on the nails that are a symptom of a zinc deficiency!
Posted by 17hens (Member # 23747) on :
Hi Heather!
Yes, I was surprised too!

Did James' mooning picture rattle someone's sense of what is permitted - A little bit of fun in an otherwise dreary world of lyme?
I am one of those people older than dirt, so as a stiff conservative prim and proper lady I have the last call on what is descent. Kids, that was ok.
