Last time I wrote I was only on Zithro once a day. Before that Doxy once a day. All oral so far. The Doxy kicked my rear. Zithro...didn't do too much. Lil sore throat here and there. I'm now on Flagyl (oral as well)250 2 x's day. It's been a week. The day after I started I had severe knee pain. Had to have help getting to the bathroom. I've been in bed for 6 days now. Everyday a new sensation, growing weaker. Loosing appetite. Last night I had a horrific spasm. My whole left side scrunched up and I couldn't control it. Needless to say I cried for about an hour after because of the new feeling and more loss of control. My temp is normally 97.6 and has had a few spikes at 98.1 Is it possible to have one slow herx like this? Is it normal? I guess I figured I would be down a day or two. Not like this. What's been your experience?

Oh poor dear!
To cheer you up, and I am sorry you are feeling so poorly....
Herxing can last for weeks to months at a time, depending on your germ load, general condition, meds and doses, and your body's ability to detox.
Some of the lucky ones, like me, get a herx every two weeks, if not a full month long non-stop.
BUT... the meds can also cause problems, so don't "assume" it is a herx. Advise your doctor that this is happening. He/she may want to change your meds, have you back-off or stop for a while.
When you are feeling up to it, here is some "herxing" info that might interest you.
Flagyl really kick's Lyme's @$$... I started with 1/4 of a 250mg tablet and was herxing within 24 hours...this is after 2 years of treating with IV abx. For me, the herxes lasted several days each time I increase the dose (1/4 tablet each time).
I'm trying to work my way up to 2 tablets/day, but it is a slow-going process - I started a couple months ago and am still only half way there.
I do agree that you should be in communication with your LLMD about this. Flagyl can have some unpleasant side-effects that need to be watched for (esp. peripheral neuropathy).

Thanks guys. I know I'm not the only one, but it's nice to hear from others. Going nuts here at home. No one can relate. It's not like telling someone you just had a baby or had the flu. They have nothing to compare this to. Makes it kinda lonely sometimes. It helps to read your responses.

I should also mention that some do better on Tindamax instead of Flagyl.

I have been on Flagyl at your dose for 3 days now. It's made me pretty weak. I overall feel weak. I also have a weird feeling throughout my body like vibrating nerves. It's not tingling or numbness but like a vibrating feeling.
My eyes feel strange also. I don't know what is what anymore. But you are not alone. And I feel a little dizzy which is a side effect of the med.

Jamers- I know EXACTLY what you mean. It's really bad when I'm laying still. Head up against something. It's made is hard to rest. I had a really bad spasm last night. My leg started kicking rapidly and I couldnt control it. So hard my knee hurts this morning. Lasted about a min. It woke me and I was kicking my husband. He is acting like he didn't know this morning. But he grabbed my hand and didn't say a word last night. The upset stomach, and more flu like feelings has kicked in since I posted yesterday. My body will not produce a fever for anything. I'm stuck at 97.6. The highest it's gotten to is 98.1. Seems like hour by hour is a new twist and turn down a long winding road.

I am feeling pretty achy today all over especially my ribs. My fingers and toes are tingly this morning so I hope that doesn't continue or I will have to stop. I don't get fevers either, same temp as you usually.
My stomach does feel strange also but Im actually taking Flagyl now for H. Pylori so I thought that was the reason why my stomach was queasy. I have pretty bad neurologic symptoms so it doesn't surprise me my herxes are like this. Hang in there.

Do you have any tingling? Day 4 and I have tingling in toes and fingers. I know its a side effect and i would have to stop but how do I know if its a herx or not?
Posted by amodernjune (Member # 32950) on :
Not tingling. My feet are quite fridged though.

How are you Jamers? Still hanging in? I have TWO MORE FLAGYL DOSES!!! WOOOWHOO!! Geeze it's been a long couple of weeks. I did manage to go to the grocery store with the husband last night. I made it till almost the end before having to sit. When I got home I was so exhausted I could barely feed myself. I've never had a problem putting food in my mouth! Next up 500mg Ceftin 2 x's a day for 6 weeks. Wondering what I can expect from that. I'm really gonna miss my Thanksgiving wine this year......sigh

I pulse Flagyl 2 days a week. I'm slowly ramping up the dosage, and I can't believe how much I can take now with minimal side effects. I do get tingling in the hands and feet, or a pain in my ear, or neck pain, but it stops after I stop the Flagyl.
I also take a high dose of Ceftin daily. LLMD says once I tolerate the full dose of Flagyl with no symptoms I've killed the Lyme cysts. Ceftin kills the bacteria that the cysts bursting open send to the blood stream.
