So, I do have yeast, unfortunately. Symptoms are not severe, but bothersome. Not in my mouth, not itching or private area problems, just bloating with pain on the right side and a rash that subsided after about a week. I believe the yeast has been cycling for awhile.

I'm on two antibiotics and doctor said not to stop them. Dr. prescribed both diflucan and nystatin. Anyone else taking both? The side effects worry me.

I've been in treatment for just over 5 years and after about 3 years, the yeast started catching up with me although I had been as faithful as you can get to the candida diet.

My LLMD also put me on both Diflucan and Nystatin at the same time. I've also been on each of the meds at other times, one at a time.

But yes, I was on both. I do believe Diflucan is the one that can be hard on your liver, so you dr. may want to keep an eye on that, but I don't recall any real side effects per se.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you do.

Cathy

Yes, I was on both for a good while. Diflucan is the one where they recommend regular monitoring of liver enzymes, and it can help with yeast all throughout the body. Nystatin just goes through your digestive system and can help there.

Thank you so much for replying. I know that there are many threads about yeast, but your comments certainly help.

Nystatin is NO problem at all... is not processed by the liver.

diflucan is way safer than you think.. but do get monitored every few months

Excellent probiotics:

Theralac

Whatever you take, take a minimum of at least 100 billion CFU's per day. Wish someone had told me that 10 yrs ago!
Take all probiotics two hours away from any antibiotics.

DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

I have been taking both for 2 months with no problems.

I do get monthly labs to make sure no liver problems.

Thanks all of you and yes, Tutu, I've read all your stuff and it is so helpful.

I have followed the diet for a long time, but eventually let things creep in because I felt better.

My doc has me on Ultra Flora Plus and Proboulardi. Also have liver test scheduled.

Just yesterday, in one of the video replays for the ILADS conference, one LLMD said:

He prescribes both because: Diflucan has a broader reach for systemic candida; Nystantin tends to stay mostly in the GI tract and colon. (end paraphrase)

Always separate probiotics from antimicrobial whether herbal or Rx (antibiotics, antivirals or antiprotozoal like flagyl) by a couple hours both directions of the clock.

And, it's best to keep herbs and Rx separate, too.

In my book, though, nothing beats OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT (OLE) as an antifungal for GI tract and system support. Seagate is the best brand I've found. Far better than most.

i've never taken both at the same time, but i have tried both.

nystatin makes me vomit, so i'm on diflucan.

i've never really had any yeast problems so far during my 2 years of treatment.

thankfully my doctor started me on a yeast preventative as soon as i started anti-biotics.

i know other lyme patients who have horrid permanent problems from yeast/food allergies because their doctor didn't do this.

i definitely think taking diflucan is worth the risk of side effects... i haven't had any problems from it at all [Smile]
