I've been having pain in my face/mouth for a good little while now, it became unbearable a few days ago and I decided to finally bite the bullet and go to the dentist. Well, turns out I have a small abscess forming and I'm going to need a root canal. Unfortunately I can't get in for another week which leads me to my next problem.

I'm extremely sensitive to medications. It seems like everything has a negative effect on me. I'll probably need to take some sort of antibiotic but I am extremely fearful because the last time I took an antibiotic (biaxin) I went absolutely insane. Extreme anxiety to the point of utter terror, auditory hallucinations, insomnia lasting for days and other horrible neuro symptoms. I was hospitalized and made to stop taking the antibiotic. What on earth am I to do? I'm starting to develop a low grade fever and I more than likely need to take action.

Those of you with powerful neuro symptoms like me, are there any antibiotics that don't send you off the deep end?

have you tried that oil pulling? that might at least get rid of some of the toxins

Posted by Vulpine (Member # 21628) on :

Hello randi, I've been oil pulling two times daily with organic sesame oil and I have noticed very little difference. I haven't stopped trying, in fact I'm swishing some around right now.

Alka seltzer gold is said to be good for herxheimer. Maybe have it on hand for after your dental appointment? Can search archive for more discussion about this over the counter med.

well to tell the truth i've been doing the oil pulling in the morning only and so far i haven't noticed anything either.

Yeah, I was hoping to be one of the miracle cases that heals their abscess with oil pulling but instead I just had the dentist shaking his head saying "Well, it was worth a shot,eh?"

Thanks poppy, I'll take a look into it.

Biaxin is a hard one for many. There are plenty of other possibilities. Stay away from Zithromax too.. as it is similar.

What are you on for the Lyme?

Posted by Vulpine (Member # 21628) on :

I am not on anything at the moment. I'm working with a LLMD, and we're starting slow with herbs and such. I just got to the point where I could take probiotics and magnesium supplements without feeling absolutely miserable...

I'm allergic to amoxicillin so I believe that leaves me two options for a tooth abscess: Flagyl and clindamycin.

Maybe try something like this?

Be sure to take s.boulardii if you go on clindamycin.

Do you feel that something like that would actually work Sparkle? I would gladly dish out the hundred bones if I knew it had potential. I will definitely be strong on the probios, thanks for the tip lymetoo.

When I had lyme, biaxin had the same effect on me. I had total insomnia and total anorexia (couldn't bring myself to eat even one spoonful of food in a day) plus anxiety. Had to stop it after 4-5 days.

However, I tolerate bactrim with no problem and amoxicillin. Even levaquin didn't bother me. I also can take flagyl. Zith gave me hives.

It is a matter of trial and error. Maybe the doc can give you a few free samples of various antibiotics so you don't even have to buy a full bottle to see if you can take what he is recommending.

Dose also matters. You may do well on a lower dose than most people.

You have to treat the abscess with antibiotics or your could actually die of blood poisoning. That is not an exaggeration.

Let it go on too long and you will wind up in the hospital and have to do IVs.

Do as much detoxing as possible. Drink water with fresh lemons squeezed into it all day long. Make that your only drink. Ask your lyme doctor for some binders like cholestyramine or Welchol pills to draw the toxins out in your stool. Do whatever it takes to keep your bowels moving. Take lots of magnesium. Eat garlic or Kyolic every day.

Keep us posted on how you are doing. So sorry this is happening to you.

There are studies that light can kill bacteria & be useful in dentistry.

Here are some studies done by a dentist in UK -

----

The LightWorks by SOTA is also useful. It has infrared & red LEDs. I haven't tried blue LEDs but I have read they are used to kill bacteria in acne.

Thanks for all the info TF, I appreciate it wholeheartedly. My dentist seems to think that I should be fine waiting a week until the root canal, he remarked on how it's just barely forming and is quite small but I do understand how deadly a tooth abscess can be. My father-in-law had a friend who died suddenly from the same.

That's a great idea, to try out a few samples. I think I'll end up doing that.

Lemon water is the only thing I drink besides water, I love the stuff.

Thanks for the support everyone, I'll keep you updated.

Didn't get to say it last night before I fell asleep but thanks for looking up that information for me sparkle, that's quite intriguing.

Just wanted to update everyone that was so helpful. I went in and had a root canal done today, the endo was apparently astounded by my tooth, saying it had the deepest roots with an odd structure. I'm hoping he did a good job on it because it's the last thing I need causing me trouble again for awhile.

He said I didn't need antibiotics. There was a lot of inflammation but it should all clear up now that everything was taken out.

I'm worried about the mercury I inhaled/ingested during the procedure. The tooth he drilled into had a large amalgam cap on it and I know I inhaled a bit of it...

Vulpine,

I'd love an update on how things have gone since your root canal. I'm in the same boat right now. I have an absess and have started Clindamycin and will soon be going for a root canal.

Vulpine ,glad that your tooth situation is resolved.I am curious about the reaction you have on biaxin.
Do you think it is a side effect of the med or a die off because you are killing bacteria?
I would suspect you have a large germ load and this is die off. But maybe everyones constitution is different and you are actually allergic to the biaxin.

I did also go pretty insane from die off the first 6+ months of treatment was absolute hell, like bad acid. This episode was triggered by alinia and then a-bab.

I am now on biaxin ,flagyl and bicillin, feel great mentally .I believe this to be because my germ load has been so reduced after treating for 2+ years.

Thanks norcal! I don't really want to guess at what's going on with my body but I have had similar reactions with other antibiotics as well. Biaxin was simply the worst of it. The symptoms I experienced don't seem like they'd constitute as an allergic reaction but I really am not in any sort of authority to say. My lyme doc seems to think it was die off though, so there's something. I'm hoping that I can get into a place where I can begin treatment like yours, I'm just so amazingly sensitive to everything, like a lot of people around here I suppose.

I am rifing for an abscessed tooth. I had to get it pulled. The rifing seems to help.

I also used allimax (a garlic supplement) and grapefruit seed extract, and lots of vitamin c.

The antibiotic I'm on is penicillin. sp? (I don't have Lyme)

Maybe a lyme literate dentist could help you,or is he one?

Posted by tickled1 (Member # 14257) on :

Heard back from LLMD's office today. They said go ahead with root canal b/c really no other option and take the Clindamycin for however long dentist says.

I asked nurse why I would have whole body nerve and joint pain along with the absess tooth and she said sounds like an autoimmune type reaction.

i dont understand why ppl are getting root canals...they can really mess you up..maybe search on here about them. i know some who could not get well until taking all root canals out

Posted by tickled1 (Member # 14257) on :

I've been doing a lot of reading about the dangers of root canals and I'm scared to death but my only other option is having the tooth pulled and it is near the front.

I do have some vanity left and am not willing to have a missing tooth in the front. What else can I do?

have it pulled and put in a bridge. I have had many friend who could not get well because on the bacteria stuck in root canals. My Dr has a paralyzed vocal cord due to infected root canals. absolutely wouldn't risk not having your voice & staying very sick

from my dr:
7.) Dental revision: Cleaning infected jaw bone sites can be helpful. According to some experts, tooth extraction often leads to chronic bone infection. Panorex x-ray or limited dental CT scans can show these pathological areas, which can be helped with surgical debridement in about 15 minutes by an oral surgeon. Best to have the mercury levels reduced and Lauricidin coverage in place prior to undergoing revision surgery to reduce the risk of reinfection. Bacteria in the jaw bones can travel into the blood and be spread to joints and other tissues. A strong link exists between dental organisms and arthritis and heart disease. Read this excellent summary of the book "The Roots of Disease" for a better understanding of these sneaky jaw bone infections:
