I have had TMJ for years . my bite was off. and was causing shifting to my right side. so i have alot of knotting in my right neck muscles and and down my right shoulder. its annoying and can be a real pain. I am currently going for massages and cupping massage sessions. it will take time to resolve. i also have a splint i wear in my mouth.

I take tylenol SOMETIMES. like only if necessary.

I really want to start taking natural herbal stuff that will help relax the knots and treat the pain daily I want them to be safe. I hate taking prescription/narcotics

anyone have any good ones?!?!

Do you take magnesium? That helps the muscles to relax.

You might also want to try magnesium oil--that helps me with my tight leg muscles.

Topic: Looking for long term pain management

Look for CORYDALIS here

============================

As LymeGoAway was quick to mention, MAGNESIUM is the number one helper for TMJ muscle tension.

How that is and other TMJ matters are discussed here, regarding physical therapy and muscle exercises that are VERY specific:

I swear by trigger point injections. Muscle spazms do NOT go away on their own - in fact, they get worse as the blood flow stays constricted. I had as many as 7 shots at one time done in the back of my skull and shoulders.

It's a tiny needle with Lidocaine and water in it (think Novacaine). And the pain relief was immediate (because I went numb) and no longer could care less about a needle. Stick me wherever!!!

The initial effects stopped the referred pain that spreads elsewhere, and I'd be left with a little soreness at the sight of the injection. I had to go about every 10 days for a few series, as I was covered with muscle spazms.

I also had to fix the CAUSE of the spazms, which is MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY. This is a must fix, otherwise the spazms will keep coming back. I had to use IV Magnesium chloride numerous times, supplemented by weekly intra muscular magnesium sulfate shots.

You could check out the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook -

I have on occasion worked out a spazm on my own - using applied pressure (knuckle applied to the spot for as long and as hard as you can stand it.) Yes it hurts like heck, but think of it as a thumb war. Sooner or later, if you don't give, the spazm will. Then I would apply any type of lotion that has Arnica in it, and then apply heat.

Valerian (which is the natural form of Valium) might help you relax the area a little, but it's not enough to work out those knots.

Jumping on a rebounder WILL help somewhat as well.

lymegal,

valerian root? you asked.

It does not address the problem.

Still, I think for evening use, that would help but I would never take this during the day if you need to function. Especially until you see how you do with evening use.

Driving would be out of the question.

It's very sedating.

My ND gave me something called Inflamyar. It is a homeopathic, and she says some of her patients swear by it. I haven't tried it yet, because I am trying to track how changing my medication affects things.

I've had some terrible muscle pain and knots, and that is why she gave it to me.

Lymegal, I have similar issues. Magnesium helps me. I like jarrow formulas magnesium optimizer.

Topically I like Toprecin. It especially helps if your massage therapist can use ir while working on you. It is not a miracle but takes the edge off and helps with that bruised feeling you get when you have worked on these knots.

I also really like an Epsom salt lotion I get at CVS. It works best if you use it right out of the shower.

I have not used it in a very long time.... But to just halt the cycle...nothing worked better for me than flexeril.
