I've just started doing sub-cutaneous (not intramuscular) methylcobalamin B12 shots.
The shot itself is fine, but somewhere between 5-15 minutes after, the area starts aching, and sometimes burning mildly.
Both times, about 30 min later, I got a fairly sharp aching sensation under where the injection was.
Today, I found when I was walking and do ab exercises, if I tensed my muscles or jarred too much, the spot would start burning and aching again, fairly painfully (like a bad side-cramp, but localized to one area with burning as well)
Is this to be expected?

Are you letting the alcohol you use to wipe the area fully dry before giving the injection?
I was doing a different kind of injection and noted some pain similar to what you describe, and found out that was the reason. Can't say it is YOUR reason, but thought I'd toss it out there to consider.
You can check with your local pharmacy or your doc if no one else has a good explanation.

Yes, tensing the muscle into which the injection is placed will cause aching and pain for a while after the injection. A heating pad or hot compress may help relieve the ache.

Hmm. I can try relaxing more. I did think that since the needle is extremely short (it is just supposed to go under the skin) and I am doing it in the ahem teensey tiny bit of flab I seem to have around my middle, I don't feel like I am injecting into my stomach.
But at the same time, the aching feels deeper than just under my skin. The burning feels like it is right at the surface though.
I might wait and do one more injection before asking, only because I've missed a lot of work for doctors stuff lately, and I don't want to hassle my LLMD over the phone unless i have to

b12 had to be intramusclar. I found that out the hard way also. It will burn like hell otherwise and leave a nice big red dye mark on your skin.
You need a longer needle. Once it is deeper you will no longer burn.

- You might get one that is additive-free from a compounding pharmacy. It must be refrigerated but that really made a good difference for me.
I was also allergic to the alcohol wipe.
Also consider sublingual as a alternate method. Shots really do work better for me but some of the sublinguals are a good stand in. -

I was told specifically by my LLND it was subcutaneous (she even told me to put it in the "fatty bits")
It came pre-packaged in the syringes, and they only have little needles.
This is from a compounding pharmacy and I do have to refrigerate it.
I'll just see how it feels this time, and then ask her about it.
