Does anyone know why it takes so long for our Vit D levels to go back up?
It's been months now and it's only gone up a few points......

How much have you been taking and what brand? Also note that lyme is kind of a chronic infection and the body may be working hard to fight it, including using lots of the vitamin D available. Also note that the lyme bugs in some instances will use that vitamin D for their own protection, so supplementation is not always a good idea.

How much have you been taking. I started at about 28 in late spring. I was taking about 4000 daily and read I could take considerably more.
I upped it to about 12000 in late Sep and was tested at 52 in early Dec.
I currently take 14000 daily.

Fat malabsorption will impair absorption of Vitamin D.
Also make sure you are taking cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) instead of Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol).
Two different Endocrinologists have told me that the body uses 4000-6000IU of Vit. D every day, so your level won't increase unless you are taking at least that much...

Thank you for the responses. I'm currently taking 4000 a day and am finally up to 40 now on my levels.
I have read that Vit D can go up quickly so it needs to be closely monitored because too high a level is bad too?

I would not worry about too high.
I take 5,000 units a day but in the winter many days I'll take 10,000 as it will help fight off colds and virus. The highest reading I've had is 82 (started 2 years ago at 38). You don't have to worry about it being too high until its over 110.
I haven't checked my level since September when it was the 82.

In August my dd's level was 23 and we gave her 2000 IU a day. In November it was 22 and we upped it to 5000 IU a day. Have not retested yet since but we get labs done again in 4 weeks.

Hi. I'm a big believer in the natural source - Cod Liver Oil. Your body cannot absorb D without some fat. Also, with the CLO, you are getting all those essential fatty acids that are so important to brain health.
I like the Carlson brand (comes in a green glass bottle) as benefits were noticeably different when we switched from another "health food store" brand that came in plastic. It also comes in capsules for those who are squeamish about the very mildly fishy flavor, laced with either lemon oil or cherry. In the wintertime by BF and I woof it down by double tablespoonsful when our instincts are so inclined.
