When using Lactobacillus Plantrum, do you still need to use a probiotic?

My Dr. recommended this for me since I have C diff.

I thought L. Plantarum was a probiotic...? It's one strain in the probiotic I take (mine is a blend of 6 strains).

That's what I'm not clear about.

It is one strain used in the Custom Probiotics brand for c diff

It's also in kefir. It's probably a good idea to take a bunch of different strains. It has been studied & there are papers you can read about it. For reference -

PS - this one is supposed to be good for C diff., too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii

Recurrent Clostridium difficile infection
Administration of two 500 mg doses per day of S. boulardii when given with one of two antibiotics (vancomycin or metronidazole) was found to significantly reduce the rate of recurrent Clostridium difficile (pseudomembranous colitis) infection. No significant benefit was found for prevention of an initial episode of Clostridium difficile-associated disease.[7]

I have had c diff three times. You need to add more than just Lactobacillus Planatrum to your diet althoug that is a good probiotics to fight c diff. You need lots of good probiotics including saccryomyces boulardi-the good yeast-to overwhelm the bad bacteria in your gut. You should also make your own kefir and eat saurkraut and other cultured vegetables-organic is best it keeps the pesticides and antibiotics in the milk from killing off the good bacteria in your gut you are bulidng back. try different probiotics-Custom Probiotics, Theralac and VSL#3 DS are the ones I used. The c diff patient board http://www.cdiffdiscuss.org/phpBB3/index.php.
Is a good resource for all things c diff. You can also try using charcoal to bind up the c diff toxins.
Be well.
