Nonna, it changes the ph of the cell and makes the antibiotics stronger. It does also help reduce inflammation, but I think it does that when taken alone.
It makes the herxing worse, or kills more bacteria faster, so if you are on abx it will increase inflammation.

I am on plaquenil in conjunction with other abx.

RCI is right is neutralizes the cell to make the abx work better - especially doxy.

I was put on Plaquenil a year ago when I was diagnosed with a lupus-like autoimmune disease. It significantly helps my pain, fatigue, brain fog, dry eyes and dry mouth.

It's supposed to help with babesia, but I haven't experienced anything I would call a herx. It's definitely decreasing inflammation, but I couldn't say how.

Isn't it funny we're all different? Plaq almost put me in the hospital. I thought I was truly dying, the die off/herxes were just too brutal for me. Worst drug to date but have heard lots of great stories.

Horsefly - I started plaquenil 4 days ago and added zithro today. I feel terrible. Increased muscle pain amd fatigue. My mood changed the day after I began the plaquenil (quite down). Could this be the plaq?

What was your herx like?

Plaquenil makes me herx awful. I have been pulsing it every other day. It's just too much every day. T. Maria same thing as you muscle pain, fatigue and joint pain (knees) I'm on it with Zith and Mino.

RC1 -i just added the zithro and will be adding doxy in 5 days.....then flagyl (pulse dosing). I think I will give it a few days and then call my LLMD if it doesn't let up. Pulsing might be a good idea. It has also brought my mood right down - not good to be down when you are in the process of healing...lol. It seems like a pretty strong med. Thanks!

T. Maria, it's been bad on my mood too. What do you think this combo is hitting?

Posted by T.Maria (Member # 36396) on :

Well...this is my first treatment so I am new to this. She said she is mainly getting the lyme with babs and bart being slightly touched upon. She wants to see my symptoms get better before she really goes after the co's. It's quite an aggressive treatment plan. But I do trust her. She will adjust if it proves to be too mich for me to handle.

What did you llmd say about your combo?

This is the first time I am on this combo, I've been in treatment for a year and a half. I was getting ready to go off abx. I was about 85%, then I had a relapse.
My LLMD says he thinks it is Bart and I am going to be adding Rifampin next. I am just so surprised at how much I have been herxing on this.

Plaquenil helped reduce my pain and inflammation. My LLMD says it also works as a cyst buster.

I have been able to work full time while misdiagnosed with lupus and I swear it was because of plaquenil. I have no side effects of it. My son is taking it now with no issues. Just getting better.

I will tell you that I was allergic to the generic version of plaquenil.

Good luck!

Are you taking it with ABX,,,??before?????after?? food??

I'm not on doxy so does it help all ABx's??

but is plaquenil something like 45 min. before or does it matter//
[confused] and does it do the same with zith or only biaxin?/

Posted by cocowyo (Member # 36286) on :

I should mention that I haven't been on any antibiotics for any reason in the year I've been on Plaquenil (treating parasites first).

Nonna - I do believe it helps all abx. I take the plaquenil with food (as I do with all my meds instructed by my llmd). I take them after the first bite of food and before the second bite.

It seems like everyone responds so differently.

Hi Nonna05

Just back to the site after YEARS to reply to someone looking for help and happened to stumble on your post.

I was on plaquinel for 6 months along with biaxin. This was after about 5 weeks on tetra which made me herx bad. I never really herxed with biaxin and plaquenil but I do believe it did some good.

I will never truly know how much plaquinel helped the lyme or lyme-like illness I had, but I certainly think it did not hurt it. Plaquinel is supposed to be a cyst buster but I don't how true that is...in my book it may just be another way to attack the bacteria and when put with another antibiotic such as biaxin it appears to work for many.

I am well now going on >5 years. Off consistent antibiotics January 8, 2007 when I stopped the plaquinel and biaxin. I then moved on to chinese herbs and never looked back.

I am back running every day, hiking, no residual that I can see, healthier than most my friends.

So yes I think plaquinel is a good medication to use if you have long term lyme to get the germ load down. Do I think it cured me...no...I think it was what I did after my germ load came down that cured me.

Don't be afraid of it...but it did cause me to itch a lot, sweat a lot and yes I had major gut issues at the end of my 6 months. It took months to get rid of my GERD after I quit it. But I was bound and determined to stay on it 6 months. Again, I never really herxed on plaquinel like I did on the tetra but I do believed it helped me.

Follow the directions on the bottle about when to take it...
