which lab test would I need to get to check for kidney function and health? Is a comprehensive profile enough? I am having kidney pain and can't really afford a doctor. It would be easier and cheaper to get a test through directlabs online.

Anybody? Is a Comprehensive metabolic panel (cmp-14) sufficient to test kidney function?

Well, you might start with blood tests, but you may ultimately need other types of tests.
All I know about kidneys is that they check your creatinine level and calculate your glomular filtration rate.
I don't know that you can look into this on your own. My husband's numbers were outside the normal ranges so much that he had to go to a nephrologist and have a special 24 hour urine collection test done. That test showed that he was perfectly normal.
So, I don't think this is anything to mess with if it is actually pain in kidneys.

Yes, order the CMP 14. I believe there are 5 kidney related tests on the CMP: BUN, Creatinine, eGFR, Albumin & Globulin..oh, and the Ratio tests too. I order from directlabs as well.
