My daughter was bitten by a tick 2 weeks ago. We were able to get our doctor to give her a 4 week prescription for doxycycline, which she has been taking. But the spot where the tick bit her is still red and inflamed.

Any suggestions about what we should put on it--or anything else we should do?

Thank you!

Sorry to hear of this. Sigh. I think she needs a LLMD, if possible.

1) Doxy only works in very high doses. Typical low doses can do more harm than good in the long run.

2) Doxy is NOT FOR CHILDREN [Might she be a teenager, that might have leeway but there may be more than just the teeth-darkening reason for that.]

3) No single drug is enough. Combination treatment required.

Be sure to see:

See page 12 - 13: Combination therapy & why that is so important

Page 18+ details various Rx doses for adults & children

Doxycycline is not for children.

After two weeks, "the spot where the tick bit her is still red and inflamed."

If there might be any mouth parts left in the skin, they should be excised under magnification in a doctor's office.

It's very important to be sure. If any mouth parts remain, infection can be nearly impossible to get into remission.

Still, it can take a while for the rash to subside. Be sure to keep photos at all stages.

You might use:

* tea tree oil (if she is old enough to not have that make its way to her eyes or pillow case), or

* a colloidal silver solution on the rash and then maybe

* a myrrh - goldenseal ointment

* Boericke & Tafel Califlora Calendula Gel

No petroleum products, though.

Good luck.

PROBIOTICS

I also hope the doctor instructed her to take probiotics - hours away from any Rx, supplement and away from food.

AVOID SUN EXPOSURE

- even through windows. I hope your daughter has been instructed to avoid ALL sun exposure. Doxy can cause the skin to burn very badly in a short time, even through a window.

Thanks everyone. She is a teenager.

The rash can last a few weeks because it isn't just a localized reaction, but a general immune response. She can also develop other rashes at any time and any location on her body as she fights the infection. To be safe, have her doctor take a look at it. Perhaps it will resolve on its own, but it's best to make sure she doesn't have something more going on, like a localized cellulitis. Better safe than sorry. Good luck to you!

Be sure she stays on doxy until the rash is GONE and until she feels WELL for 2 months.
