I've read food lowers the efficacy of rifampin, but I cannot wait 2 hrs after eating and wait another 2 before eating...especially since my other abx need to to be taken WITH food.

I try to take it away from food. The only antibiotic that ever bothered my stomach was doxy. Just my situation.

The majority of Doxy is excreted vis the colon (where most abxs are liver/kidneys)
So makes sense Doxy would upset your tummy.
Most people I know taking Rifampin take it 1 hour before food (and then take the other abxs)
However many pharmacists will say take it with food regardless.

I guess it depends upon your stomach. I would never be able to take it without food.

My LLMD said that although the directions say to take it away from food, most people's stomachs can't tolerate Rifampin without food. She told me to take it with food.

I had to take rifampin without food, and it was horrid. my dr then had me try it with food, but the stomach stuff continued. I find that some meds just affect certain digestive tracts in certain ways. Good luck with the rifampin, it didnt help me much but I know it helps many. Try to hang in there, I know just what you are going through. Sorry you are so ill.

My pharmacist told me that ALL antibiotics should be taken with food. She said that the pharma companies suggestions are just suggestions and to ignore them (she said taking it without will ruin my stomach).
I got better on it with food. I was also taking doxy and had dairy (which I wasn't supposed to do) and I still got better (don't take it too seriously).
