Started bicillin not too long ago and the air hunger is driving me over the edge.

Paper bag does squat. Sitting in front of the ac helps a little. What are the rules about gse? What helped your air hunger? Is there a certain food I can munch on that might help?

Anything is appreciated!

Also, how am I suppose to breath during this flares? Slow or short quick breaths?

Breathe out completely, hold your breath out before you breathe in. That helped me, but a paper bag did, too.

Tonic water helped me with that symptom.

Are you treating for babesia? Sounds like you probably need to.

COPD = chronic obstructive pulmonary disease primary symptom is air hunger.

Nutrients that are supposed to help include:

CoQ10, NAC, EPA (omega 3), 5HTP, Panex Ginseng, Mg, vitamin C, Ginger, olive extract and...

good old exercise...tolerance levels of course - stationary bike/walks, etc. Seems contradictory, but exercise helps.

Learning how to breathe properly helps. Believe it or not, many of us don't breathe properly.

And some docs will even send patients to respiratory care technicians to learn how to breathe properly...I know...my daughter.

Most people who experience panic and anxiety attacks regularly have forgotten
how to breathe correctly.

Are you in treatment?
With what?

How do you know if it's just air hunger as opposed to something more serious, such as COPD? I have it almost constantly and am treating babesia.

I'm currently taking Zith/Malarone/Plaquneil and Bicillin shots.

Good question Larae30. I'd like to know. Can air hunger ever be dangerous or is it just annoying?

Thanks everyone. Going to try the tonic water right now.

I also take zith/malarone/plaquenil among other meds. Sometimes it seems to get a little better when I pulse art in, but not always.

I also have major sinus/allergy issues, so I'm not sure what is from what!

I've had severe air hunger for years. i was afraid my ALS dx was correct and I was dying. I recently took Alinia and my breathing has gotten much better! Look into parasite treatments.

Interesting 2young. Did you take it while on abx?

Alka Seltzer Gold has helped me with this issue!

I,too, am on bicillin, as well as 4 other abx.

use an oxygen concentrator 5 liters per min or regular medical oxygen through out the day for 15-20 mins. Script required, good anti infective therapy but u will have to pay for it out of pocket if your O2 sat is normal!

my air hunger has been improving with antibiotics as my other symptoms have been. very gradually and a long and winding path. extreme heat (either outside or in the shower) greatly increase the air hunger. fans help dramatically. i even use fans in the cool weather...they take the edge off until the extreme air hunger passes. i hope it helps you as well...

Cutting and pasting from a post of mine in the archives.

Air hunger for me is related to babs AND acetylcholine. I only know this because I use muscle testing and found that things that increase my acetylcholine help a great deal to alleviate the air hunger.

Later, I read the article at the link below that explains that the borrelia toxins affect acetylcholine.

I'm cutting and pasting just a fraction of the article:

http://www.townsendletter.com/FebMar2006/lyme0206.htm
Dietary Supplements in Lyme Disease
One of the known actions of the Lyme spirochete toxin is to diminish the release and availability of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a simple organic compound (see above for chemical structure).

This substance is biosynthesized by the body as required in nerve activation and transmission.

Supplementation by the precursors of acetylcholine synthesis would be of value to Lyme patients since they have a deficiency of this substance. (See Listing 1.)

Listing 1: Dietary Supplements Increasing Acetylcholine
Synthesis Improving Neurologic Function

Phosphatidylcholine (Lecithin)
Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Lysine (Amino Acid)
S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM) (Sulfur-bound Adenosyl Methionine)

If the inhibition of acetylcholine release were total, Lyme patients and those suffering from food poisoning would not be able to move; they would be completely paralyzed.

Since the blockage is only partial, any increase in the amount of available neurotransmitter would benefit anyone experiencing neurotransmitter blockage. For this reason, dietary supplements increasing the amount of available acetylcholine have been shown to benefit Lyme patients.

END OF QUOTE

----------------------------------------------

I'm not sure why it causes air hunger but there is some info related to anxiety and air hunger symptoms that show a relationship to acetylcholine. I think acetylcholine does control breathing to some degree.

My air hunger started out not lasting very long but as time went on and before I figured out how to stop it, it would last for weeks at a time.

I was able to control it most of the time with supplements but it is so much better since babesia treatment.

The supplements that have helped me the most to control it are
Huperzine A
choline/insositol
Citicoline
Seriphos

I also take many of the supplements listed in the article.

I find that boosting acetylcholine also helps brain function a great deal.

I have had air hunger too. I have been checked when it happens. Oxygen was 99% blood pressure and pulse were normal too. Some times I run a low grade fever with it.

I get it when I get exposed to, or have a virus. So for me I think it's either an immmune response or massive inflammation
