Hi everyone, I'm in treatment for lyme and just had a new and not-so-fun experience last night. I'm currently on rifampin and cefpodoxime (for two weeks). Last night I was starting to get a bad headache when I went to bed and then I woke up a few hours later with horrible, intense pain all through my head. Then my face, shoulders and neck went cold and went kind of numb and the pain from the headache started traveling down my spine as for as between my shoulderblades. The worst of it finally went away after a couple of hours.
I still have a headache today but not anywhere as bad as it was. I've been lucky (knock on wood) that I haven't had especially bad headaches lateley and never anything like this, so I have no idea what might have brought this on! I didn't eat anything unusual... Anyway, if anyone has any idea what this might be, it would be a comfort to me to know! Thanks in advance!

I don't know, but you need to call your doctor ASAP!

OMG, thank you for your responses! I contacted my dr. so I hope he gets back to me. It's just a mild headache now, but it was pretty scary when it happened so I wanted to check.

This does potentially sound like meningitis or meningoencephalitis. I had sub-acute meningitis/encephalitis countless times before and during treatment (like migraines, but with burning down the spine), and truly acute levels of it on a number of memorable occasions (bedridden, unable to function, wishing I were dead). RIFAMPIN WAS A HUGE TRIGGER for the worst of it!
I had to try three times before I could even tolerate rifampin for a full course of treatment, but when I finally could, it was well worth the horrible herxing. It helped me quite a lot.

If it went up your neck and then wrapped in a band around your head, it might be a tension headache..I learned from the neurologist that this can be caused by spasms in the muscles in the upper back....he gave me high doses of vitamin d and it went away
