I recently tested positive for anaplasmosis (through LabCorps), which I believe is either the same as ehrlichiosis or similar. My LLMD said she would normally put me on doxy for this but instead, since it is summer and I am in the sun a lot, she is putting me on Mepron/Zith.

I have never heard of Mepron/Zith as treatment for anything other than babesia. I was treated with Mepron and Biaxin several years ago when first diagnosed with lyme and coinfections. (My insurance co. wouldn't pay for more than 6 days of zith). So, I am trying to figure out why my LLMD chose this treatment...

I am wondering that since I tested positive for anaplasmosis, that maybe she is covering all bases by treating the babs too? It is certainly possible that I still have babs.

I did not have a pleasant experience on Mepron, to say the least....I actually told myself I would never go on it again! But, now I am second guessing, thinking that I should try it for a month and see how it goes with the zithromax. I have much more support now (divorced from a very controlling, anti-lyme treatment man) and I don't have to hide my treatment and pretend to feel great when I feel at my worst.

What do you think?

My guess is that your doc decided to wait til cooler weather to treat the anaplasma and is treating you for babesia now.

Standard treatment for anaplasma is doxy -- although some docs think mino works also. For tough cases a combo of doxy and rifampin is used.

Thanks for the replies. I am not excited about tackling the Mepron again. I am actually very nervous. I am afraid of what it may do to my mood (which is already really bad). I am afraid of being stuck on the couch for the rest of the summer, which is so impossible, as we all know, when we have children...

THanks for listening [Smile] CB
