I am using Magnesium for constipation. My doctor told me to slowly ramp up on the dosage until I could get my bowels to move. I am at a dosage of 7 capsules daily and having poor results. My mouth tastes like I just ate baking soda and sometimes I get numb feeling. I went off a while back and started up again to see if these symtpoms would come back. Sure enough it has something to do with Mag. Someone had told me Alinia was good for Lyme constipation or Bells Palsey of the gut. Does anyone know about Alinia and how it works? I have to do something because even though my doctor tells me high dosages of Mag is O.K. I think it is affecting me in a negative manner.

I had the same issue...or have.
I just started Triphala....an indian med...natural.
One pill a day and it has worked great...no pain or strange issues. Also supposed to help the liver?
Look it up...then decide.

Levaquin is the antibiotic that has helped my bowels the most. If I stop it I'm miserable. (Miserable as in no BM for over a month, terrible abd pain, nausea, vomiting, worse gastroparesis).

I still have to take mag but I'm picky and only like 2 brands:

http://www.iherb.com/Life-Extension-Magnesium-Caps-500-mg-100-Veggie-Caps/37384

Miralax can also help. I use it when if I do get a little backed up, sometimes mag is still not enough for me. Try starting at one capful a day. It is a powder that works by pulling water into the intestines, it turns into a gel and then gently pushes out the waste. Nothing is absorbed, it all passes out.

There is also an RX med called Amitiza that can help for constipation. If these things don't work.

And remember to take digestive enzymes. I like "Digest Platinum" by Now Foods brand. It has worked better than any other even more expensive brands.

Another natural way to get the bowels moving is high dose Vitamin C... your body will use what it needs, any excess will be excreted in the urine...

If you take 1 to 1 1/2 tsp daily it helps keep the bowels going.

I have found powdered magnesium (like "Natural Calm") to be far more effective for constipation, in divided daily dosages.
