Recently dx'd with Lyme. Besides all the other problems I'm having - they are now looking at my parathyroid glands. Seems my calcium is too high. Is there any connection between hyperparathyroid and Lyme Disease?

An ultrasound of the parathyroid gland should be an easy diagnostic tool to tell you more.

They thought I had this problem for a while and it was not so much the change of a "hyperparathyroid" as possible nodule in the parathyroid caused by calcium imbalance. ONLY an ultrasould or other imaging can "see" - just feeling will not be enough.

But, with us, sometimes these tests can be off. What KIND of calcium do you take if you take supplements. THAT can make a huge difference as some kinds are not very well absorbed.

Did they do a repeat test and consider all the variables regarding the calcium test results?

As we know, the HPA-axis can just get clobbered with lyme.

This author discusses the importance of addressing hormonal imbalance in chronic Lyme disease. Don't recall if she gets to the parathyroid or not, though.

Yes, they did a second test and it showed high calcium again. I think they are going to test the parathyroid hormone. (Also, AMP which is low - still can't figure out what that is.)

I'm taking two Viactiv a day. I don't think that is very much.

Did the test INTRACELLULAR calcium?

If that is Calcium Carbonate it's not the best kind for our bodies. It is not well absorbed. Now, I don't know if that means there would be more circulating in the blood and not really get into the tissues -or not.

But you might consider a different source when this is all worked out.

Also, I tried to find the ingredients but there are different kinds. Some contain corn syrup. That can be very damaging for various systems in the body.

If it has other additives, most of those can also affect body functions.

I hope you find the information you need. I know you can't see a LLMD but, somehow, I hope you find what a LLMD might say about all this (even if not everything is lyme, it's important to consider how lyme affects the whole body).

Maybe someone will be along with the right answers. Hope so.

My calcium and parathyroid were high too before I knew I had Lyme. They have come down after I found out I had a stuck kidney stone. Had it removed and level are coming down.

Yes, it looks like it could possibly be hyperparathyroidism. Has to do with the parathyroid - which is nothing to do with thyroid I found out. I guess I'll know more when I get some more testing done. Just seems crazy there's all these problems.
