My dd just had a positive culture test and is still having lots of fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, shoulder/back pain, despite a year of IV ceftriaxone, then flagyl. Also had a year of Mepron/zith.

Then she was off everything for three months.

Given the test results, LLMD wants to attack both Lyme and Babesia. He has prescribed IM Bicillin shots weekly (high dose) for at least 8 wks - along with a Coartem (3 days I think) then Mepron (higher dose than before) protocol.

Has anyone else had this type of protocol - and can you tell me how potentially hard it will be on my 15yo?

I know Zith is usually prescribed with Mepron - does the Bicillin fulfill this requirement?

Why does taking breaks from Mepron prevent resistance? Or is that incorrect?

Thanks!
Racer

I don't know about taking breaks from Mepron-but I am in a similar boat.

If I treat babs, I can get it somewhat under control-then the lyme flares.

If I switch to lyme-the babs flares.

So now I am hitting both..and not feeling too good

I had not heard about bicillin just being done once a week. I was on bicillin, twice a week along with mepron and zith. I am now due to switch to bicillin with either levaquin or rifampin.

The bicillin is the strongest dose, so it is once/week. I have heard of 1/3 this dose being done 2-3 times/week.

Good god - my brain is addled. I deleted my mistaken post.

What I meant to ask is: since mepron monotherapy is said to lead to resistance, does the mepron/bicillin combination inhibit resistance?

thanks,
racer
