She is taking compounded liquid. It says take a hr before or two hours after food. With Doxy it said the same but I always gave her with food as per advice I read on boards. What do you do with Rifampin?

I never could take meds without food.

I didn't even know children could take Rifampin. UGH! I wish both of you lots of love and luck.

I did both with food per my LLNP. In her case given her age I would consult her LLMD.

My pharmacist said that even though it says to take it without food, it's just a recommendation by the pharma company. She said to ALWAYS take all abx with food regardless of what the pharma label says. I took it with food had great improvement on it.

That was my philosophy for myself, Catgirl!!

Thanks I will call LLMD to confirm but it seems like the way to go is with food. It's scary, but at the same time I am really hoping this helps. Her pain was improving, but has returned, and she has lots of Bart symptoms so I think we have run out of options.

I read on a site that the reason you take rifampin on an empty stomach is that taking it with food lowers the absorption rate.

One of the ways of testing whether your absorbing the med is the urine. If it is orange colored than your body is getting enough medicine.

Hope that helps.

Hopeny, FWIW, my LLMD told me he really wanted rifampin to be taken on an empty stomach.

Thanks, someone else told me the same about empty stomach. I am going to :
1) call LLMD
2) start with food today for first day/s to see how she does
3) monitor urine
4) try empty stomach if LLMD says/if urine not orange
5) pray this works [Smile]

This question regarding urine not being orange was actaully asked on a webinar with an LLMD recently. He said it does not mean it is not being properly absorbed. Everyone's system/effects will be different on meds.

My LLMD said Rifampin only looses 3% to 4% absorbtion when take with food.

I also asked that question about the orange urine to a LLMD online and my own LLMD. The color of your urine doesn't mean it's not being absorbed. Mine was orange and now it's not.

I was always told by my LLMD to take it all at once in the early a.m. on an empty stomach or the late p.m.

I agree with Ellen, Summer, and gmb.

Our LLMD says take on an empty stomach. This hardly ever happens with us. My kid has been on this a long, long time (maybe 8 months?), and it is working. Possibly it may have worked faster if she took it on an empty stomach, I don't know.

Good luck.

DS9 took rifampin in 2 doses - his morning dose he took with breakfast, and the bedtime dose he took on an empty stomach. His pee was orange when he started, then faded over several weeks. When he had to stop taking it and then start again, his pee was orange again for a little while. In any case, Rifampin was a miracle drug for us for many many months. He had his biggest and best gains on it, but also his biggest herx.

we've started the first few days generally taking with food and hope to move to without. No changes in pee color. LLMD said to take in 2 doses. I was waiting to see stretch marks break out as validation but have not seen any as of yet. DD has not tested positive for Bart but has symptoms. DD had a long crying jag last night, regular colored tears. I am really praying that this helps.
