I know some of you have had bone pain when taking vitamin d. I am having the hardest time taking it. I've been on it for months. Some months seem tougher than others. My doc wants me to stay on it and says it can take many months to feel better. It is causing achy bone pain in feet and tightness on my spine between my shoulder blades.

I've had a bone scan and it is clear so I know it is the vitamin d. My levels are up to 48 but were 16 when I started.

Can anyone relate or describe your pain on vitamin d?? I'm nervous and wondering if anyone else has felt like this?

I take about 5ooo units a day and no bone pain from it. I've never heard of that.

I have bone pain from one of my infections and it's really the worst pain I've ever felt in my life, but I don't think it's from vit D.

Sorry

I take high-dose Vitamin D, and I have never had bone pain from it. Does your doctor think the pain is from low Vitamin D?

Are you on D2 or D3? From your post, I'm guessing D2?

I take 2000 - 4000 IU D3 daily. When I don't take it, I feel the pain.

Hi Friends

I greatly appreciate the responses! Yes, the pain is caused by taking the vitamin D. The head of neurology at a teaching hospital who wants me to get my levels to 70 is baffled by this. He is a wonderful man who sees patients with neurological problems including Lyme.

There is some literature about people with osteomalacia experiencing bone pain when trying to remineralize their bones with vitamin d. There is some speculation that my bones became demineralized from some of the abx I took combined with my low vitamin d levels..

Unfortunately it can take 6-8 months to feel better....ugh!! My bones are sooo sore and my spine is killing me..I'm at month 5 so I will keep going!

I've done both 50000 d2 and then just the 5000 d3 as per my doc.

Thanks so much for the feedback!!

Personally, I would scrap the D2 and take only D3 and see if things change.

I got achy after two months of taking D3. Turned out (I think) to be a lanolin allergy. I stopped taking d and feel better physically, but emotionally and energy wise felt better on it.

What you're describing sounds like how I feel like when i have takenI Prednisone. I describe it like a headache in my bones. It is mostly in my arms in legs. Wonder if d is metabolized by some like a steroid?

My vit D levels were down to 6, which in turn was causing my parathyroid hormone levels to go sky-high. I was given a prescription form (D2) and after taking one 10,000IU pill, woke up the next morning with my left eye swollen shut and the left side of my face numb. This stayed like this for several weeks. No doctor "believes it", but I swear it was from the prescription Vit D.
So then I tried several brands of otc Vit D3, and after a few days would always feel like I was getting a cold!
UNTIL I discovered Carlson brand Vit D3.....no weird ingredients in this one. The only one I can tolerate.
I still have to be careful not to take too much all at once, slow and steady have gotten my vit D level up to 36.
I get the Carlson brand on Vitacost.com
