Hi everyone..the past few days I have been experiencing this lump in the throat feeling that I have had a few times before. I cannot figure out if it is from anxiety, acid reflux, post nasal drip or a combo of the three.
I just had an upper endoscopy 2 weeks ago-no ulcers or signs of problems with the esophagus other than some chronic reflux. I do have a lot of allergy stuff going on right now though, and I have a ton of anxiety (obviously) dealing w this illness.
Anyone ever experience this? Thanks. Jess

Hi jess, I know that feeling pretty well although it is not as bad as it used to be. In my case I guess (since I do not know of any allergies) I think it is rather a Immune reaction to the lyme (since the throat is a hotspot of the IS). My doc suspected reflux and I took some meds(pantropazol) but they had no effect.

Is it an actual lump/bump that you can physically feel?
I have what feels like a lump of some type in my throat area, more like the esaphegus (spelling) - right side. Sometimes it makes it hard to swallow. Usually feel full and don't want to eat when it does this. When I'm laying down it feels worse, especially if on my left side. there is physically nothing there. It comes and goes for days at a time.
Along with it I sometimes have pain in the ribs, to the right of the ribs near the middle of my tummy. Or pain when laying on my back, feels my lungs but they are clear of any problems.
No physical issues: lungs checked, xrays, external and internal sonagrams, gallbladder checks out find, endoscopy shows nothing.
Is this what you're talking about? I want to know what this feeling is, and how to make it go away. it is uncomfortable, and irritating but not painful per se.

Journeys, no it is not an actual lump or bump that I can physically feel. It is the sensation of having a lump or something stuck in the throat. Jess.

that's what mine feels like, but with additional issues posted above. It is strange. maybe someone on here will know what it is . . .

I hope someone does too, and I very much hope you feel better soon. Jess

I've been scoped, scanned, etc. It is always there when I don't take antihistamines and/or when my reflux is active. But there is an extra dimension to it when i am anxious-it is the first thing I feel on really bad days when i wake up.
It feels tighter, achier, and almost like it is throbbing. At these times, xanax is the only thing to give me relief.

Joysie-I think you are right, it is extra rough and I feel this lump int the throat stuff more when I am anxious. I have been really worried lately about my feeling worse on the IV meds and I am planning a wedding and its so EXCITING but also stressful because IDK if I will be feeling well by the time I walk down the aisle and oyyy lol.
I think it really is all three things (anxiety, reflux and allergies) hitting at once, and it just makes for a VERY uncomfortable feeling, Thanks for the response. Jess

2 possibilities you need to consider. Could be thyroid related, or as Joysie mentioned -- may be an allergy symptom.

Thanks Bea-my thyroid was thoroughly checked and scanned just a few months ago. My allergies and post nasal drip are quite bad at the moment though, and thats why I think its definitely a contributing factor. Thanks again. Jess

I have had this before, not for awhile now, but I felt like there was a lump in my throat, I take nexium and have for a long time and I know what reflux feels like and it was not that.
I also would get what felt like tightness in my chest which would get worse at nite sometimes. Another Lyme friend of mine used to get this also and she called them esophageal spasms.
Last year I had a barium swallow and a upper endoscopy, nothing showed at all. I never figured out the cause of either one, but I truely believe it was a herx reaction.
I have had the both of these in the past sometimes when changing meds, it is gone now. I hated that feeling because it felt like my tongue was partially paralyzed or something, but I could swollow fine, very strange. Also I made sure I took lots of mg for muscle spasms.
Or it could be post nasal drip, I get sinus problems with Lyme and sometimes get this feeling of a lump. Feels worse when I first get up and sinuses start draining. Maybe try an antihistamine or decongestant to see if it helps at all.
How long have you been on antibiotics? Hopefully things will settle down soon for you. Congrats on getting married, try not to stress too much :-)

BB-thanks so much for the post. Yes, there is a tightness that occurs with it at time for me as well. I think I will try something for allergies, as post nasal drip is definitely a factor with me right now.
I have been on the IV for just a few weeks now, so I know I have a long road of treatment ahead of me. Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes I will try not to stress. And thanks about the marriage-its the best thing that has ever happened to me, meeting this man and falling in love with him.
Thanks again. jess

BBinme- thank you for the reply. i feel better knowing it's just not me and JessicaBookLover.
Mine is not herx - I just started my antibiotic regime on Friday - this was happening before I was diagnosed and one of the reasons I went to the dr.
I thought is was in a FMS flare-up - this was a new symptom I've never had before, it was scary - tending to believe it's part of lyme since it appears that many of us experience it.
I'm not going to attribute mine to allergies - doesn't fit for me.
But stress/anxiety would fit.

Yes! I had this last week!
Felt like a lump in my throat and it was somewhat difficult to swallow and just had constant pressure in my throat.
Now it is gone. I have no idea what caused it- I've never felt it before. The only other thing I can think is it had something to do with neurological issues since I also had tremors last week
Posted by jessicabooklover (Member # 39427) on :
Daynise, yes I get the pressure feeling with this as well. I am glad you arent experiencing it currently. Jess.
Posted by daynise (Member # 39609) on :
I'm really glad it's gone- just I wish I had some clue what caused it!
I also thought maybe I'd developed an allergy to something? But it felt different than any allergic reaction I've had to other things...Don't know?
Hope it goes away for you soon!

Are you on IV rochepan (same as rifampin right? The week I was on rifampin, I had the most intense pain and pressure in my jaw and area of my glands and throat. I knew it was the drug cause it was the most intense starting an hour after taking it. No one eve explained why it was happening. But it stopped when I stopped. (I was also ravenous the entire time...and had to have jellybeans...I was also weak and shaky, so I stopped).

I like to add that I too have this lump feeling when other symptoms flare up, often before and sometimes when other symptoms occur.
P.s. all the best for your marriage Jess!

Kudzu and Kern, thanks for the posts. And Kern-I appreciate it. I am excited to be a bride! Jess.

DD gets these symptoms too. She thinks it is allergies to meds etc.
She stops one thing and then it comes back and then thinks it is another med, supplement etc.
So difficult to figure out and of course to have these horrible symptoms.
Hope it goes away for you.
Congrats to you. Posted by jessicabooklover (Member # 39427) on :
Jane- I am sorry your DD gets these issues too. Thanks for the congrats too . Jess.
