I have developed extreme photosensitivity on doxycycline and amoxicillin. Has anyone else experienced this and what have you done to help control it? (Aside from avoiding the sun entirely)

I had it. I got the doxy burn. Horrible! It is a medication burn, not a regular sunburn. I thought I would have to go to the ER, the pain was so bad. Narcotic pain killers did NOTHING for it!!

The only thing you can do is cover up. Even your hands while driving. Wear gloves. You can get burned through the windshield.

This is a VERY common reaction to doxy. For this reason, lyme docs won't prescribe doxy in the summer. Staying under an umbrella in the sun may not even be enough. They sell special clothing for this very purpose. Check on line.

I have never heard of amoxi causing this. I was on high dose amoxi for 2 years straight. Are you sure it was the amoxi?

Coolibar.com has a great line of clothing for sun protection. Most of it looks like normal clothing, but it's got SPF built in. They also have things like face protectors that you can attach to your sunglasses. I love mine.

Also, they offer icky-chemical-free sunscreen, which is available in many more places nowadays, but they've got a wide variety to choose from, which is nice.

But, yeah, you're kind of stuck finding ways to avoid exposure to sunlight. I couldn't even be outside in mid-winter-Seattle on a cloudy day without burning when on doxy, until I started really covering up.
