What do Lyme patients and fish have in common?

They both take...

In fact, one Lyme patient was overheard to remark he was all tanked up on his fish doxy dosage...

(Hope y'all know I'm being fishetious here...)

..................................................
FISH is a four-letter word. So is DOXY.

Well, guess some pharma companies and drs have Spring Break trips to pay for about now...

Seriously, I think I've read too much sci-fi and think about a purposeful management of shortages for a variety of purposes, including a bit of fear, control, and dependency.

You are hilarious, Robin!

Didn't end up getting the fish stuff. I never have shopped around for a prescription before, but I ended up getting it for $56, close to the original cost, at Walgreens.

Great! I'm going to pick up my refill today. Last month, with insurance, it was $15. Wonder what I'll be charged today? If it's significantly more, I may refuse it and call around. Thanks for the tip on Walgreens.

Mine went from $7 to $512

I can't believe this. Doxy saved my life. What is the cause of the shortage. Do they just not use Doxy much anymore?

Posted by daynise (Member # 39609) on :

Robin knows the secret...but it will not be available either soon... most sites say supplies are limited.

I will say that birds take doxy too... cough. cough. [Smile]

I just wanted to add to this thread that I picked up my refill earlier this week and I paid the same $15 I did last month. No one at the pharmacy mentioned a shortage to me either. Maybe the shortage depends on where you live? Odd!

"Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. Doxycycline will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea."

http://www.drugs.com/doxycycline.html

Doxy is used to treat a lot of common ailments as you can see above. My husband's eye doctor has him on a low dose of doxy to treat the effects rosacea has on his eyes. It is working well.

I hope we can get his refill with no problem and no price increase. We will see.

Ya, I guess you are right TF. The academy of Pediatrics doesn't even mention acne. Only tickborne infections and malaria.

I just got an Rx of doxy for my child yesterday. Was $54.

Posted by Catgirl (Member # 31149) on :

I've had no problems finding it at the main drug stores.

I used to get it for $4 at Walmart. Haven't had to use it for a long time....I wonder what the deal is?

I just filled a prescription for Doxy. I've been off abx for about 6 months and was going to start up again.

The pharmacy wanted $450 (with insurance) for 120 tabs of doxy!!!!

Wow, this is scary! What's really going on??

Posted by carolann2013 (Member # 39964) on :

I got my first prescription of Doxy and for 100 it cost me $560.00 before my insurance kicked in.

I am not sure that it will be hard to get in my area, but what you will do is pay like it is going to be hard to get.

As with everything else. But my doctor did say that there was a shortage.

Just something else to worry about. I am going to refuse to worry about it until I go to the druggist for my refill and he says "We are out"!!!

I googled shortage of doxy and some are saying that with the mild winter we had year before last, outbreaks of Lyme disease has climbed..

Maybe more people are more aware of Lyme disease too!

This scares me. Will the situation get corrected and prices back to normal at some point - soon?

Posted by carolann2013 (Member # 39964) on :

Susank,

That is the same thing I asked about gas prices right after it hit 2.00 a gallon, many years ago!

What I am reading is that there is now only one manufacturer of doxy. Without any competition, that company can charge whatever they like.

My husband takes 50 mg daily for ocular rosacea. The copay for 90 pills was about $2.50. Today, at the same pharmacy, the copay is over $23. So, that is about a 10-fold increase.

Plus, the pharmacy has to order it. They have none in stock.

I think that from now on I will use my mailorder prescription plan for this med. They will give a 3 month supply of any generic med for a very low price. I think that is my best way around this situation.

This idea may help others also, so I thought I'd post.

It doesn't look like the situation regarding doxy is going to change any time soon.

What about compounding it (compounding pharmacy)? It has to be less expensive doing that than $500.

Posted by BuffyFan (Member # 34679) on :

since there's a shortage wouldn't it cost even more to get it at a compounding pharmacy?

Posted by Catgirl (Member # 31149) on :

No, I don't think so. I imagine the shortage is on their production end. Compounding pharmacies are not that much (much less than $500). The maker of doxy also might want patients to try their more expensive product that is easier on the stomach. Perhaps they are just making less of the inexpensive one, and more of the one they will get more money for (instead of $3 it cost me $60 for the one that is easier on the stomach).

Walgreen's raised their price on doxy, does anyone know of anywhere that still offers good prices with a prescription?

Just checked my doxy prescription which I filled in April, but haven't started yet as I am still trying to talk myself into taking the companion drug for babesiosis, lariam. The doxy is not the typical capsule, but a tablet. The lable says " Doxycycline Hyclate 100 mg tab substituted for Doxycyclate Hyclate 100 mg Tab, MFR: Watson Labs."

Although there was talk of the doxy shortage when I filled it, I wasn't charged any more than usual, but don't know what my insurance was charged.

May be a different story when i refill. Maybe I will call them now and report back.

Dumb computer! LOL!

droid1226, thanks for the Canadian drug website; I've been wondering if there is one that I could trust!

So where is doxy the cheapest now and at the right strength, i.e., 200 mg twice/day? (I'm asking either via pharmacy or the other alternatives). I know people that need to know! Plus, it is best, I think, to have it on hand in case of a new bite.

The link above isn't in the right strengths/forms, and is coming from the UK.
