Currently my headaches and migraines are not well managed, I can't take otc pain relievers and my current Rx isn't really effective for me (we keep trying). My neuro wants to see if something structural is behind my migraines.
I feel a headache coming on this morning and I'm worried the noise of the MRI machine will kick the headache into high gear.
Anyone with experience? Hope? advice?

Drink lots of water to flush out the MRI contrast.
Today's MRI's are a lot quicker than older MRI machines, so the noise won't be as long-lasting.
Otherwise, I don't know what else to tell you...

They are also going to give you headphones (probably with music), so the noise should be okay.

P.S. My MRI tip - close your eyes before they slide you in, and DON"T open them until it's over and they slide you out. It gives a much calmer experience, no need to feel closed in.

You are probably experiencing a vasculitis type inflammation that can happen when the lyme bug tries to move into your brain. I was abusing my hydro cortisone to deal with the headache pain and everytime I came down from the dose of cortef the headaches would return. I was nauseous and the doctors would reluctantly fill anti-nausea meds. I don't even know if they are narcotic, but they behaved like I was lying about the pain. OTC pain meds wouldn't stop this pain train. As to the MRI, I've had plenty and the sound is not pleasant. You can get through this. Just treat yourself after and through the procedure, you will think about this. It is about 20 minutes long and you are in constant communication with the gal in the booth who is the tech. If between "pictures" you need a break, they can take you out of the machine, but you cannot move. Depending on the machine, if you need to see out into the room, they can attach a mirror while you are in tube. I, like others here, think a SPEC scan to show functioning is important to show brain function, and is another test. YOU CAN DO THIS.

Yes definitely agree with Tammy...close your eyes before you go in and keep them shut until they bring you back out and think calm happy thoughts...you'll do well...good luck!

I found that if I close my eyes as mentioned, I never "see" how close the top of the MRI machine is! As long as you are not afraid of the dark, all is good!
