I recently had an appointment with my llmd and she rxed minocycline. I can't remember exactly what she said but I think she said I could take the mino all at once instead of spacing the dose out.

That got me thinking today. I always take my two 250 mg zithromax at the same time at night cause it is easier but maybe that is bad.

my bottle says take one tab twice daily.

Is there a reason to take it twice daily instead of all at once like I have been doing??

For some reason I just assumed it didn't matter.

I took Zith 1x/day and now take Mino 1x/day. However, my husband takes Mino 2x/day.

Hi gigimac:

We spaced out 2x a day 12 hours apart to keep consistent level in blood. Took probiotic 2 hours before or after depending on which does and other medications.

Zithromax stays in your system 9-14 days. The reason to take it twice a day instead of at one time is to help prevent stomach upset. Personally, I would rather take it one time a day.

Minocycline has a shorter half life so requires a twice a day dosing. But I know people who started taking it only once a week because the herx was so hard to tolerate.

Please call your doctor and find out how she wants you to take all of your meds.

I do plan on contacting my dr, but the she is only in on certain days. I will be talking to the dr. soon, especially to clarify the dosing of the mino cause I can't remember what exactly was said about dosing.

Kgg, I did not know that about mino, I figured it would be similar to doxy, which I tolerate pretty well minus the vomiting! I hope I do ok on it.

You can also call a pharmacist.

The pharmacy puts your doctor's instructions on the bottle, so until you can reach her, you can probably assume that she wants it taken in two separate doses.

Below is pasted information on azithromycin from Medscape. It shows the peak plasma time, which is only a few hours. So that could be one reason for wanting to make sure it is taken twice a day.

Half-Life: ~70 hr (IR); 59 hr (ER)

Protein Bound: 7-50% (concentration dependent)

Peak Plasma Time: 2.3-4 hr (IR); 5 hr (ER)

Absorption: Rapid

Bioavailability: 37%; variable effect with food (increased with oral suspension, unchanged with tablet)

Distribution: Extensive; distributes well into skin, lungs, sputum, tonsils, & cervix; penetration into CSF poor

Vd: 33.3 L/kg (PO); 31.1 L/kg (IV)

Metabolism: Liver

Excretion: Feces (50% as unchanged drug); urine (5-12%)
