I have a friend who recently became violently ill...high fever, rash on trunk (not bull's eye), swelling in wrists and lips and then violent hiccups that have lasted for a week.

He has only had a reprieve from the hiccups for a few hours at a time. They tried a muscle relaxer that helped but only for a few hours.

He has now become so ill they had to admit him to the hospital. The fever is gone but he continues to have the violent hiccups and is now experiencing joint pain that is so bad he needed help walking.

The doctors have tested for rocky mountain, lyme, etc but the test won't be back until tomorrow.

They did immediately put him on oral doxy but now they are saying it may be viral so they took him off the abx....thinking that the orginal doxy may have burned his esophagus and is the reason for the hiccups.

An endoscopy did show that his esophagus is torn and damaged from all the hiccuping. Bloodwork they have done is coming back fine?!

When they took him off the abx the joint pain did get a little better and hiccups stopped a few times...but only for an hour or so.

My thoughts are that the horrible joint pain could be from a herx? Not sure on the hiccuping part?

Has anyone here ever experienced anything like this? Any suggestions for what this could be? He does have an infectious disease doc.... but no diagnosis yet.

Oh forgot to mention, my friend had only been back from a trip to Colorado for a week when all of these symptoms started to occur.

They had done a lot of hiking, biking, outdoor things....so it seems very likely he could have been bitten although he doesn't recall a tick or insect bite.

We heard of a man in the hospital with severe hiccups.....

Someone suggested he could have a hiatal hernia (sp?) where the stomach is crammed up too high and the esophagus is kinked, causing the hiccups.

The family was going to see if they could find a chiropractor or cranial therapist who could check it out for him and get things back in place.

I don't think it is a hernia since it came on suddenly at the same time as these other symptoms. The lyme other tests are not back yet but the docs took him off abx because they are now saying it is viral. Sure seems he has all the symptoms of lyme to me....anyone ever heard of a virus that is this severe?
